Engine Watchdog TM2 - Where's the best place to put sensor?

Just purchased one of these niffty units after checking out some of the blokes on here highly recommending it and also after just paying a fortune for a rebuild engine im not taking anymore chances. should be here on monday and was wondering where would be the best place to mount the sensor??? the guy who sold me the unit suggested if possible to put it on where the thermostat housing is. i have a D1 300tdi.

any feed back would be appreciated.

Sorry chaps just did a search and found some info on the subject. But there are still alot of if's and but's on the matter. Some say to place the sensor at the rear of the block and some say on the thermostat housing.

seeing that most of the users of the unit are setting there temp at around the 65 degrees marks when out and about playing will the temp rise higher than that?? just trying to find a happy medium for the temp setting and where to place it.

    cheers simon

I have a 300Tdi in a Defender and placed my temp sensor at the back of the head. From memory there is a bracket which holds the breather tubes in place and I placed it there. The temp normally reads about 70 - 72 deg C, getting up towards 80 - 82 when working hard on hot days. I haven't talked to anyone else to see what temps they get, I just know what mine does when it is normal so will know when it is out of it's normal range.
    Hope this helps.

    Thanks martin..

So i guess it just a trail base thing with your own rig. just keep adjusting it until you know what your highest temp is. would you know the actual boiling temp of the engine??

I put my temp sensor on the back of the block also. I don't know what temp it is set at but during summer and traffic it will go off at the lights and then settle once you are moving again. This way if it goes of when driving I know I have time to pull over before it all over.

Its not so much a case of where the sensor is placed but being aware of what temperature you need to set the alarm. I like George 130's thinking.

Not sure what the boiling point of the engine is, but either way this will obviously be different in different places on the engine. George's approach is sound, but regardless of where you put it you will soon get a 'feel' for what temps you should be seeing when.

I dont have a low coolant alarm for the only fact that i dont like using the plastic plug with the sensor on it. Have heard of stories of them just cracking and blowing off and thats why i have the brass fitting, would love to put one of them on there but not with the plastic fitting.
