Thats what it looks like under my 1990 3.9L (175 000kms) oil filler cap. I thought it might have had infrequent oil changs but your oil was done every 4000kms and is the same so I'm not as worried now.
I hope I get 320 000+ kms from my 3.9.

Some more info....the spark plugs at no time were ever oily, certainly nothing wet and black nor were the insulators ever oily.
The engine breather which vents the lifter gallery never showed any oil contamination nor did oil ever exit via the dip stick tube.
The front oil seal which was of the rope type never leaked nor did oil under pressure ever exit via any other seal.

JC, I agree that sort of CR would certainly have contributed to the wear, I would have opened up the combustion chambers by unshrouding the valves and laid it open a bit around the flame travel area, which would have dropped it to about 10:1 and then modified the dissy to suit, would have got rid of the ping, wonder where all of the bits off the timing chain sprocket ended up, Regards Frank.
He fitted composite gaskets which would have been the same as adding 20 thou which would have dropped the CR about 0.5 of a CR ie from 10.5 to 10 :1.

The change interval for the factory air cleaners was every 20,000km or 12 months or every 10,000km or 6 months if used in dusty conditions.

I think Rick130 could give you a definitive answer on this.
But I'm a great believer in companies like Land Rover and Shell and Caltex et al who have done millions of $ worth of research on what oils to use and what intervals that oil should be changed at, modern oils, esp. Synthetics are so superior to oils 40 years ago, oils ain't oil as they say.
I think that the question that needs answering is what great benefit is derived from changing your oil at 3K to 4K, when the experts LR and the oil companies state 10K or even 20K in some cars is the CORRECT time to change the oil and you can bet that there is a Safety Factor embedded in there as well.
When I owned trucks (Diesel) driving interstate and clocking 5K/week I used to change the oil and filters every week (5K). It involved 60L of oil, 3 oil filters, 2 fuel filters costing around $250 (eq. $600 now). Then came a service bulletin from Mack Trucks that a new oil (Shell I think) would extend oil changes to 10K, so I took the advice of the people who should know and changed oils. Oil analysis showed no difference in engine protection and decreased wear. So these companies, who have nothing to gain by you buying less of their oils, continue to produce longer life oils and I for one believe it is a total waste of money, time and resources to discard oil that has not reached it's correct oil change Klms, Regards Frank.
But changing oils early won't give shorter engine life...

Another issue may be how long in time between changes.
If a car is left lying around and only doing short trips, this is defined in service manuals as "extreme" use, and oil change intervals reduced to time not distance. eg my Honda Jazz calls for 6months OR 10KK.
