    Disco d3. Tdv6 reliability.

    Hi to all,

Is there any real issues with the D3& TDV6 engines?

Know about the LRA pathetic backup, but is the reliability of the machine good enough to think , well !Backup might not be such a issue?

Having Late model Toyo reliability probs and Chits are Trumps

    Hi Sumo,

If you are like me you are considering upgrading to a D3 TDV6, then I suggest you check out the D3 area of forum.
I have been looking at the posts & most owners are pretty happy with their D3s. Certainly less regular (read redo every 120K issues than D2). The only major black spot I have found with TDV6 is that some can catch fire. I read this in a UK LR mag & also spoke to a D2 owner who saw one go up out west. The jury is out as to whether this is leaking hydraulic fluid, fuel, glycol hitting exhaust/turbo, or electrial fault.
I will be researching further before purchasing. It would certainly be interesting to know if only TDV6 & auto trans, as this could really narrow down the cause & how to avoid the issue.
    Cheers..B

A D3 burnt to the ground on top of Perths longest hill while towing a dingo digger and it looked to me as if the trans fluid boiled and blew out the dipstick tube.If you drive that hard you deserve trouble. Pat

I've never worked on a D3 so don't know if they have a dipstick or not but the smoke was coming out of the engine bay so either that or it split a cooler line. Pat

There has been a RECALL on D3 and RRS tdv6 eu4 2007-2008. High pressure fuel pump-front bearing failure.
Seems the bearing is'ant getting enough lubrication from the fuel at idle.

Perth doesn't have long or steep hills compared to the east coast. I would expect a D3 to be able to tow its rated limit up the longest and steepest hill WA has to offer without issues.

You constantly seem to be acting as an apologist for LR products, but are the first to jump on Nissotas etc when any faults are reported with them. I realise that living in Kalgoorlie and being a Land Rover owner must be tough, but you could try and show at least a smidgen of impartiality

So that thing you drive up heading east out of Midlands???.Be a toyota, nissan mechanic for 6 years and then come back and talk to me,run a workshop where the WHOLE fleet is recalled 6 times in a couple of months for steering wheels snapping off, bursting into flames, twice, brakes falling off, wheels falling off, both front and back on two different models, throttles sticking open, bonnets opening at any time the list goes on.I stick up for LR because they aren't perfect but they don't try and kill me either. Sumo,
Get a copy of "4X4 Australia Gear Guide 2010" magazine. The technical editor of this magazine is a bloke by the name of Allan Whiting.

When the D3 came out 4X4 magazine purchased one for a long term test vehicle. When they off loaded it Allan bought it for his personal ride.

To quote Allan at the start of the article "When the chance came to buy 4X4 Australia's long term D3 I surprised even myself by handing over the necessary cash. I hadn't previously considered buying a LR product because of perceived reliability issues" end quote.

This makes a great read and it is finished with, and I again quote Allan

"Our D3 continues to impress and we can't see anything other than a D4 as a likely replacement for it" end quote

The Feb issue of 4x4 Australia has the 4x4 of the year awards which the D4 won(not surprisingly) In the story they kept referring to improvements on the already brilliant D3

    Dave.
