really was smoking
This morning my Series III Izuzu filled with smoke as the wire from the Battery teminal on the solenoid to the Amp meter melted. Still ran, but lost lights, flashers, horn, ignition, etc. [ It will start by jumping across terminals on solenoid. Parked on hill to clutch start and tried that jumping across terminals]. Other wires look okay. Does everything go through the Amp meter, in other words is this the main power supply to everything else?

The demise of the ammeter . Non-shunted ammeters fell out of fashion roughly 20 years ago for much the same reason you experienced , especially when theres no fusible link .The only thing that doesnt run through it is the starting current of the starter motor . (and the winch if you wired ir right)Throw it away , unless you can fit a shunted type , even then who needs them ,
