    TD5 turbo destruction

G'day today on the way to work suddenly lost all boost. Went hunting to see if it was waste gates or the common things. The last thing i checked was if the turbo was actually turning.. Well it seems it is jammed hard and won't budge there was no noises or anything to hint it was on its way out all very sudden. Does anyone know of a rebiuld kit or one avalible and what sorta $$$? Also if anyone has had this happen to them before what did they find caused it?

You can get rebuild kits for the GT turbos. Yours is a GT2052S.

However, if it's locked solid you may have shaft damage. You won't know until it's apart.

Commonly caused by either poor quality oil, incorrect grade or infrequent oil changing, but can also be a result of material failure or diesel contaminated oil.

Usually if the shaft has failed, it will take out/ damage the housing too so possibly another unit will be required. I have seen several with the shafts seperated in two as the bearing fails and the shaft gets 'hacksawed' through, eventually breaking off as the turbine tips contact the housing at high speeds. This ca cause an engine runaway with the oil pouring into the intake system. You were very fortunate not to have that happen

Thanks, i will be pulling it apart tonight when i finish work. I have checked the oil there is no diesel in it so i guess thats a plus. The person who owned it before me was really bad with changin the oil but since i've owned it its been done every 5000 for the last 20000km. I shall let you know what i find when its off.

    Exclamation Explains Alot

Well this is gonna sound very different.... I have since pulled off the turbo and Dad pulled it apart. Has any one here used a welsh plug to block of the EGR pipe? Well thats what was in my EGR pipe, Lodged in the turbo is the very welsh plug from that pipe. It must have got hot enough to warp on the recent 1500km trip to Adelaide i did. Then when i got back i replaced the intercooler hoses because the old ones were leaking boost. so with a mixture of heat and more boost preasure it has managed to push back through the exaughst minifold and down into the turbo. For any one who used this mothod to block the EGR i suggest you check how its holding up.

Do you mean the engine breather pipe up stream of the turbo inlet? Or the actual EGR pipe that goes in to the exhaust manifold at no.1 cylinder?

Sounds like a bizarre thing to happen Did it do any damage to the impeller?

The diesel in the oil reduces its viscosity and hence reduces the effectiveness of its lubrication. You can normally tell as the diesel will make the oil thinner. This means your injector seals are leaking.

I have also wondered about the turbo rebuild kits, I had the intake hose off mine the other day and felt a bit of play in the shaft, so the bearings are slowly on their way out I'd say. I'd really like to go to a VNT when the original turbo packs it in.
