    Springs arrgh!

    Hi Guys

I just splashed out on a set of Dobinson's springs to lift the 110. My fronts are supposed to be 30mm higher and my rears 45mm

When I measure them against the old springs, the fronts are only 10mm taller (free length). That's as far as I got on the install.

I've checked John Barge's spring info site land rover spring specifications and my fronts appear stock

The coil thickness from new to old looks the same.

As the free length of the new front coil is only 10 mm longer than the original, surely I cannot expect a 30mm lift can I ?

I suspect their cattledogue doesn't differentiate between V8 and Isuzu 110. I am running LRA orange in the front of mine and happy with them height wise. I f you have a bar and winch etc then at least 220 psi and 17" free length would be the go I reckon. The 4bd1 weighs in at about 360KG, the V8 a paltry 190

    Thanks Justin

Despite my signature, the vehicle in question is a 300TDI

Oops, yes i suspect then that there has been a mix up with part numbers? What number are the dobinsons? Are your original ones 8044/45's? (White/White, Yellow/yellow) If so a genuine 50mm can be had by using NRC 9448/9449's.

Measure the coil Diameter . even half a mm can make a difference of an inch. Are these springs variable rate or single rate springs these days .
Its been 17 years since I used to buy half a doizen sets a week from an old mate , Les Richmond at Rangie spares . Them days twas only the county , standard was 220 and HD was 330 lb springs in the rear , with orange or purples in the front .

Yes I have a yellow/yellow on the front drivers side. 370mm free length. Progressive spring.

The longer of the front dobinsons is 380mm free length. Linear spring. C51-018. I was expecting around 400mm

Ok, called the people who sold me these springs today.

They claim that even though the new spring is only 10mm longer, it will give me 30mm of actual lift because the new spring is linear and not variable. They tried to tell me that the coil wire was bigger in diameter but I don't believe it is.

Does anyone else recon a 10mm longer linear spring will give me a 30mm lift over a standard progressive spring ? Anyone had a similar experience ?

Yes very possible I put Kings in my D2 - they were shorter than the originals but I got a 30 mm or so (unintended) lift with them...

With replacement coil springs. Spring rate (force/deflection - usually lbs/inch) can be increased by:

    Increasing the wire diameter

Reducing the number of active coils - this will result in increased operating stress in the spring material (requiring upgrade to material with higher allowable strength).

If the wire diameter and number of active coils is unchanged the spring rate will be the same and it will be necessary to increase the free length to increase the loaded height.

You may have a combination of these 3 factors (wire dia, no coils, free length). This is often the case as the range of available wire diameters is limited.

Increasing wire diameter and number of coils will increase the height of the fully compressed (at coil bind) spring. It is necessary that the axle bump travel does not result in this situation.

Edit: progressive spring rate is obtained by winding the some of the coils at a closer pitch. In service the spring rate is lower when there are a larger number of active coils. Then as the spring is compressed the closely wound coils become bound and are no longer active, so the spring rate increases because there are now less active coils.
