    Major oil leak

    Hello from Italy,

Just bought a 1990 defender 200 TDI with 155k km in great condition. had two mechanics look at it and both gave me the thumbs up. However after driving it about 800 km i noticed a major leak coming from the front part of the engine but i cant figure out where it is exactly coming from. There is a good amount of oil dripping...

Tomorrow im taking it to the mechanic. Just wanted to know if anyone can give me any advice, input or experience.

    i really appreciate the help.

    alll the best

    First, welcome to the Forum.
Is the oil coming from the engine underneath the fan, or is it coming from the side of the engine towards the front. Usual culprit is the Vacuum pump, opposite side to turbo. Check what sort of oil it is, is it black, maybe red from power steering hoses or Radiator (if you have an Auto Gearbox), could also be fuel from a fuel line or injector pump, need more info and maybe some pics, Regards Frank.

    Hi Frank,
thank you for the feed back. the oil is black - it seems to be coming from under the fan but i cant tell very well, there is oil all over the place. the dripping on the ground (oil stains) is on the left side of the vehichle (from a drivers point of view). From reading the threads i guessed that it could be the vacuum pump. tomorrow i will take it to the mechanic, so we can have a better look. Im worried because the mechanics where i am are not land rover experts, since i live in the country side far from where there is a dealer.
    all the best shawn

Shawn, there should be a threaded hole into which a "wading plug" can be screwed directly under the front pulley in the bottom of the timing cover, if the oil is coming from this spot then you have a timing case/crankshaft oil seal leaking or a camshaft oil seal leaking, is your L/R left or right hand drive, also could be leaking from Turbo or turbo oil return line, Regards Frank.

Something similar happened to me, and it was coming UP from the diff! big crack in the top of it. Took me ages to work out where it was coming from.

Unlikely in your case, but worth a look in any case.
