First things first, Find TDC #1 piston, front passenger side, Firing order 1 8 4 3 6 5 7 2, Passenger side bank 1 3 5 7 , drivers side bank 2 4 6 8 .
Once you have established, for certain you are at TDC #1 piston, both valves closed, the pointer on the timing cover should be pointing at TDC marked on the Damper pulley.
Now with TDC established, note that when you lift the dissy out of the block the rotor button will rotate a small amount, slide it up and down and note how far it is moving, you will need this info later. Now find #1 spark plug lead on the dissy cap, fit the cap to the dissy and mark the exact centre of #1 on the dissy body. Now turn the rotor button in the opposite direction of normal rotation the small amount you noted when lifting the dissy out of the block. When you slip the dissy back into the block and engage the cam gear the rotor button should turn and line up perfectly with the #1 mark on the dissy body, if it doesn't line up, lift the dissy up enough to clear the cam gear and turn in the direction required to line up the rotor button with the mark on the dissy.
Once #1 has been established fit the next plug lead #8 next to #1 on the side of rotation and fit to #8 spark plug, repeat until all are fitted, good luck, Regards Frank.

Silly question, but, did you plug the wires back in? Dissy turning with starter motor? Is there any spark at the coil? All useful to know before you go on.

Silly question, but, did you plug the 12V wires back in? Dissy turning with starter motor? Is there any spark at the coil? All useful to know before you go on.

Not the first time

but yes it is connected now it does fire slightly every few seconds so at least one leads hitting its spot lol

Next check then, did you put the leads in firing order (18436572) going clockwise from no. 1? You probably did, so next thing loosen the dissy clamp so you can rotate the dissy by moderate hand pressure. Turn the crankshaft to align the timing mark with 6 degrees BEFORE tdc. You should be able to read this on the crank pulley. Then with the dissy cap off rotate the dissy until the pointy star rotor (thing that turns around with the rotor button on top) lines up with the middle of the pick up coil. There is a small metal lump there. It is on the side of the dissy nearest to the vacuum advance capsule. Then check rotor is still pointing to no.1 or no. 6 opposite. This should get the timing close enough to fire.

If that works buy a cheap timing light tomorrow and check it for proper timing.

Just twigged .... Your not doing a static timing of the Dizzy, once you have established TDC :( ..... All your leads are hooked up properly :) ... Now you have to do a static timing of the Dizzy :cool:

Set the crank to TDC & then move it to 3 degrees, with the rotor button pointing to number 1
Take the spark lead off the plug *1 / find a spare spark plug and hook it up to the spark lead*1 (rest the spark plug on the motor)
Loosen the dizzy holding bolt / clamp
Turn the ignition on
Turn the Dizzy slightly / slowly, Left and right, till that spark plug zaps

Do it a couple of times till you hit the sweet spot
Turn off the ignition
Tighten up the dizzy clamp

Start the motor

Ill give it a go today

So i tried it again today

No luck followed all the instructions but still doesn't fire

So to make sure it wasn't me i had my mate remove the dizzy from my boat old 6cyl Holden

Took me 4 minutes and 23 seconds to refit it and start the engine then about 2 more to time it with the light

So its not me there is something else wrong

Y're under control. Then you might need a coil and amp for spares. Either could be faulty, try both. Pull out the dissy, connect its wires, earth it with a jumper lead, spin the sucker wth the ignition on. No steady zapping then get some spare parts.
