    Hot Squidding

My boat has been parked up for sometime, CDI unit burnt out, mid 70s 50hp merc, found a replacement on ebay in the US, it arrived on Anzac day, go figure. Any way got it fitted and went for a test run on Sat arvo with a mate and his son, to see if we could find a squid or two.
After a quite a few drifts, nothing, so last drift was declared and jigs went down. then it happened. the three rods and the hand line went off together, hadnt emptied the net and there were more comming. It was an ink bath!
In half an hour we had 29 squid . We all got an inking, should have seen the looks when we got to the boatramp. best laugh Ive had for ages.

    Cheers Steve

Nothing better than a good feed of sqid and evwen more fun catching them. Even better when you can get them to squirt ink at your wife and daughter.

Easter seems to be the prime time and always bag out when we go down the coast.

My grandfather used to take me out all the time and this was all he fished for so I got used to boating them so they don't squirt but he showed me how to get them to squirt and I have got most persons that I have taken out squidding.

One bloke turned up dressed in a white shirt and a white hat. Well that did not last long and now everytime he comes out in the boat and I say "Got one" he dives into the cabin.

When you catch squid in large volume's , you actually get a reaction to the ink, we called it " ink rot" and you get that itchy I have seen people scratch themself till they bleed.

I will find some photo's , (will take a few weeks) of fishing squid schools and seeing the boat and water black from the ink, plus people in the tropics wearing full wet weather gear , plus gloves so they dont get the ink on them.

I am talking about catching 1000-2000kgs or more at a time.

Just the other night I was watching Robson Green Extreme fishing ,and they were after giant squid. Skipper said it can happen that if you hook one it starts a feeding frenzy, and if you have enough lines in you'll end up catching hundreds. They did and it did.
They said the ink would start burning into you if not rinsed off quickly.

In the old days. My sailing days a longtime ago. Some of the scariest moments were sitting or standing all alone at the helm and unexpectedly getting thumped in the head. Bloody Flying Fish. It happened quite frequently. At first light I would check the boat over and would throw all the flying fish and squid over. It sucked if through the night I had stood on a squid. The ink was a buggar to get out the deck. You could see by scale marks how high up some flying fish had hit the sails.
It's a busy place that ocean at night.

If you catch a few big squid then may I suggest you try this recipe.

    Calamari cina (Stuffed Squid)

If you catch a large calamari - tube of say 20cm plus or you can buy squid tubes.

Clean squid taking off head wings and skin and clean out tube of insides being careful not to split the ink sack

Make up a stuffing of fresh breadcrumbs, parmesan cheese, garlic, onions finely chopped, salt pepper, parsley and sultanas (secret ingredient). Stuff tube but not too full as when cooking the tube will shrink and split. Seal end by sewing up or using toothpicks.

Now, make a red spaghetti sauce with onions garlic peeled tomatoes, tomato puree and Italian herbs. Use can use one of those Dolmio mixes if you don't have the time to muck around.

When boiling and starting to reduce place squid in and cook for no more than 1/2 hour on simmer turning a few times and making sure it is covered and not drying out.

Remove squid and keep warm while you boil the pasta Serve the pasta as the entree and then for the next course, cut the squid in rings which will have the stuffing inside. Serve with a salad or veggies and drizzle a little of the sauce over the cut squid like a gravy.

My grandmother would turn in her grave if she knew I posted this recipe.
