    Braid Vs Mono

I am a Huge fan of braided line as I usually fish 10m+ or trawl and i don't actually have a single reel loaded up with mono any more But after a night session off Port Gregory last week i will be loading up a couple of reels with 15kg mono.
The problem I had was as I was only fishing in 3/5m of water and when I got hits from oversized spangled emperors the lack of "Stretch" in the braided line lead to a bust off 9 times out of 10.
I am hoping that a reel full of mono instead of just a couple of meters of nylon leader will give me a bit more stretch to absorb the initial explosive run from these fish.
I will try out my theory tonight

Yep, definitley a 'Horses for Courses' set up required in any serious fishing boat. I reckon you would have been a bit ****ed off, too!

Just upgrading my freshwater trout spin gear for the coming summer in the big river and have gone from 8lb mono to braid (Shimano Kairiki 10lb 0.13mm). I was told about the non-stretch nature being great for sensitivity around the fish takes, but also warned about having a good amount of action available in the rod tip to absorb the shock of the takes if on a short line. We will see how it goes. Might be a good excuse to upgrade the rod too...

Damn stuff is as fine as the cotton thread I see on the sewing machine! The wind could be a factor in blowing the line out sideways.

I use both . My trout reels all now have mono as do my top water Bass rods because i was loosing too many fish . Most modern rods these days are crazy stiff and with no stretch in the line you may feel every hit but hookup rate suffers or in the case of trout you loose the fish when they jump. Some top water lures i use in the salt though work better with no stretch in the system though and diving lures are dampened by the water pressure. Im loving the mono after years of only using braid and fluorocarbon. If you can find a good glass rod give it a try as you may wonder why we are now all obsessed with carbon. I bought an old stock Abu glass small creek rod for trout and im loving it. Handed it around some mates on a stream recently and everyone was loving it. My GLX stayed in the car for 3 days.

I was back to mono by the last session of the weekend.

The spinning rod I use in the big river is a 7'6" graphite nano-carbon thingy lightweight slow-medium action and has micro-guides - my go-to mono was 6lb but did use 8lb where needed (estuary and upstream a bit from there). Nice amount of forgiving flex for the fish I caught on braid but I hated the leader-braid knot going out through the guides. I used short leaders, long leaders that were pooled for the cast, knot-sense loon goop (from my fly gear bag) to smooth the knot out. FG knot, Alberto knot, none were smooth enough. Fear of guide damage was combined with the unstable feel on casting as the knot shot through the guides of a very lightweight rod tip in the middle of the most important part of the cast - direction. I also took a few hours to calm down on the feedback of the lure dragging on the rocks of the riverbed. Through mono it is a softer feel but with the braid it felt like multiple takes in the first few metres of retrieve. Took a bit of getting used to that feedback of non-stretch. Playing a couple of smaller fish felt like fish twice the weight though so that was fun.

It was an interesting try-out and one I would go back to if they can produce a braid as transparent as mono or fluorocarbon thus making the need of a leader unnecessary. Wily trout are wily in clear water.

I find the elasticity of mono better for lure retrievals from branches, roots etc, when flicking for bass from the 'yak and let's face it, if you don't hit a low branch or the river bank occasionally, you're not trying hard enough!

When you speak of fishing with spin gear, I gather you are fishing the Rangitikei?

Ditto for big tuna. 50kg plus are possible on braid but mono is much more forgiving to the explosive power. All my snapper and whitting roads are braid. Horses for courses of course

Yep. Am usually hard-out fly fishing but a quick-growing cataract has put paid to sight-fishing and seeing the fly drifting. Gone back to spinning so I can still get some river time until they give me a new lense... then to have eye-sight of a young fella again...
