    Johnson FD-18E

    Hello All,

I have had a fibreglass boat sitting in my yard after a relative's former "friend" left it parked at my place. The relationship broke down - over 10 years ago. The whole boat being left here has been a bit of a sore point - so it just sat in the yard or out in the paddock. I recently took the motor off the boat after the boat had been "re-purposed".

Currently the motor is hooked up to the tailgate of one of my 109 tray back utes. Just out of interest today I tracked down how to find and decode the Johnson motor's serial and model codes. It is an FD 18 E. According to a number of sites this dates the engine to being manufactured in 1964! It is an 18 hp Sea-Horse. I would never have guessed that the motor was that old. It is two years younger than me. Accessed 4th March 2020 from, MODEL YEAR CHART FOR JOHNSON OUTBOARDS 1922-1969
What does the "E" mean in FD-18E? Page: 1 - iboats Boating Forums | 477798

Does anyone know what sort of reputation these motors had in their day? Would parts still be available in Australia or would I have to get them from the US of A?

I even found a YouTube clip for one... Accessed 4th March 2020 from, YouTube

It is funny how you can have something sitting around and you never think much of it. The fish and the aquatic plants are happy living in the boat anyway. I did mention the boat had been "re-purposed" didn't I....

    Kind regards
    Lionel

In the late 60s, an old codger who lived at Toorbul, on the Bribie Passage, had a Johno Sea Horse on a 15' bondwood dory. As far as I know, his offspring were still using boat and motor in the late 90s.

    I can't remember HP, sorry.
It would be fun having a tinker with it, I reckon.
