Still using my Fathers 6" wooden Alvey,it would have to be 50yrs old,at least.Used them since i was a kid, still have the 4" bakerlite i had then. And the 8Ft Jarvis Walker two piece rod, with the mark on the cork handle at 13".If we brought a fish back that was smaller than that we got a kick up the clacker.
It depends on the type of fishing that you do,we mainly do surf and estuary fishing without lures, and there is not much better for the job.
They need virtually no maintenance, dip in the sea while fishing, and a quick wash over with fresh water after a trip, all done.
I have noticed the handles on my 5" that SWMBO uses a lot are badly worn and need replacing.I got it for a birthday present, with a Mossops 10.5" 'Knockabout' rod, when i was a teen,so it would be well over 40yrs old.
My sons have gone to egg beaters, mainly because they fish with lures and braid line.
