Dear Moderators,
For those of us who know nothing but greatly benefit from those who do, can I suggest an idea for Sticky. It would be great to have a Sticky that covered recommendations for long-term preventative servicing. Not such much the details (maybe that could be a link to a specific post) but just key issues.
For example, there is the dedicated post on having the (not so much) 'sealed for life' automatic transmission serviced. And in a recent thread about buying a 2nd hand 2010 D4, the timing belt was mentioned. In the post re $15k D3, there was mention of 'control arms'. No doubt there are other hard learnt lessons that could be shared.
Just an idea.

I made the 1 millionth AULRO post
Key item, blank that damn EGR off, if I had a pre 08 TDV6 D3 it would probably be the first thing on the list seeing as you don't need to worry about error codes.
Key item: transmission service - somewhere between 50k and 80k. If you want to keep it then this is essential
Key item, change diffs and transfer box oils regularly with correct fluids. Capacity is very small.
Key Item: Always ASK to have all software checked for updates. It is not a given this will be performed.
Cheers, Mungus.

A summary of this thread <https://www.aulro.com/afvb/l319-discovery-3-and-4-a/258724-alternator-preventative-servicing.html> concerning the alternator:
1. If you are thinking of preventative maintenance, 150K is about the mark.
2. As with all preventative maintenance, it is a matter of balancing cost, consequences, where you drive, own mechanical knowledge etc (ie, a risk assessment).
3. If your alternator is still working when replaced, think about keeping it as a (travel) spare.
