Angry 2003 TD5 defender engine (tappet) noise

    Hi,
My 2003 TD5 Defender (250k) has developed a loud tappet-like noise over the last couple of years and is definitely getting louder. I have taken the car to 'defender' knowledgeable mechanics and they have no suggestions, even going as far as saying that it is normal.
The noise is always there just that on gentle acceleration the noise increase to near deafening, so much so that people in the street turn.
Odd thing is that sometimes the noise totally disappears (occasionally)
The noise does not affect performance.
I have attached an audio recording to help
Any suggestions would be appreciated cheers

Was that under load and what rpm?

it sounds like it has a slight miss to it not lifter/tappet noise

have the injector's ever been out?
does it smoke on start up occasionally (white smoke)
has the injector harness ever been changed
    have the injectors ever adjusted?

The trouble with recorded audio is it records every sound the engine makes.
I've spent many years working on TD5 engines and it doesnt even sound like one.

Honestly I have no clue, if its as loud as you suggest, I'd keep taking it to Land Rover sorts or others willing to have a look, maybe find another TD5 owner and compare the two.

and maybe get a MOD to move the thread to the Defender part, you may get more people interested.

    P.S
After playing the audio over and over and over again...
I'm clutching at straws, maybe a metallic clack, so the three things that come to mind:
    *Harmonic balancer knacker-ed.
*Timing chain tensioner jammed partly compressed.
*Duel mass flywheel on its way out.

The 3 items should easily be picked up by any decent Land Rover mechanic.
The 3 can be on off on off depending on engine load etc.
    Regards
    Daz

    Thanks for the reply Lyonsy,
I had a defender 'expert' down here in Tassie use a timing tool to ensure timing was in range.
Injector replacement, yes, replaced four years ago by another expert to try to eliminate the smoke (LETS JUST REPLACE AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS ATTITUDE) (EXPENSIVE)
I checked the 'back lash', (I think you call it) last year ( backing off one full turn after touch down), didn't make any difference.
I have just posted another thread with a new audio... a little better than previous one.
