    High-Rise Hydroponics - balcony

    Hello All,

Has anyone successfully developed a DIY small hydroponics system for a high-rise situation in the city?

I have a son who lives 20+ floors up in city. He is keen to grow his own herbs and leafy vegetables. However, space is at a premium and the prevailing weather conditions can only be described as adverse. With each season bringing in its own problems. Too hot in summer, too cold and windy in winter. Name a season and add the word 'too' to it.

The other condition is that the system cannot be secured by screws or bolts into the walls. The system must be self-supporting.

I looked online and tracked down a couple of different styles that might be suitable for a high-rise outlook. The first one I have concerns with regarding over-shadowing of light between the tiers.

The second option could have a support rack made that slopes like a right-angle triangle - to stop shadowing between tiers. The system in the video features brackets screwed into the wall - which is not an option on the balcony.

The last two videos are put there to show a different approach. In their current form the tower systems lack sufficient ballast to remain upright in the proposed location. They do look interesting though!

Have seen some wonderful homemade hydroponic systems, and as son wants , perfect for leafy stuff and herbs.
As you say, to be self supporting is the crux. A heavy base is essential , a few unused dive belt weights? bar bell weights? then work up.

    Good thinking anyway👍

Oh, and no way could I live 20 floors up, or down!
