Hi Murrey and Brian just managed to pull the water pump housings off before tea. Yes they are different apart from the extra bolt the later model housing is narrower on one side. The rest of the bolt holes appear in the same position so one could bolt either up. It can be seen from the image how much higher the top of the later Thermostat housing sits. This is is partly due to a longer neck where the thermostat is housed and its cover which is higher by design.

NO can not swap either over to the other motor. Any way worth a look.

Wondering if anyone has any idea if the late model motor (1990) is likely to have Elfin piston in it. Thought that perhaps seeing the later motor is towards the end of this motor production that it may have similar pistons to the turbo motors, as it had the twin spin on oil filters and lacked the breather on the exhaust side.

Today I finally got the late model block off the shed floor onto an engine stand. Have taken a couple of images of inside the crank area for anyones interest. There was a thread on here about converting a 4BD1 to a 4BD1T and some discussion about the aftermarket fitment of piston squirters. It looks like this 1990 motor has had the spaces were the squirters fitted milled but not tapped to take them. Heres a couple of images for those interestedhttps://www.aulro.com/afvb/[/IMG]
This ones a bit closer up and shows a threaded counter sunk next to , thought this might be worth taking out to see if there is an oil gallery behind it.

This is a block from an '81 Stage 1. You can see the obvious differences to your later block.

It's clear on this block that there is an oil gallery in there. Have a look on the front and back of the block and you should be able to see right through it.

The grub screws on the side are tapped through to the gallery, as well as the hole for the oil pressure sender.

First the good news The isuzu box with Sheldons gearshift adaptor turned up , and it is very very nice , feels very smooth in the change. Now the bad,last week pulled the camshaft out of the motor 5 of the 8 lobes had been chipped and the cam bearings looked like they had been shot peened. A bit disappointing so the cam has gone in to be regound to turbo specifications and so bought a set of oil squirters which should turn up this week which I will fit in place. Thats going to leave the injector pump and injectors left to consider what to do. Have seen turbo injector pumps in the USA but they have a slightly different looking compensator fitted to their rear. Can anyone shed some light on them, thought they may have been off Cummins 4bd1T but not sure what the story is.
Also looked up the different components of the post 1987 4BD1 and
4BD1T motors the differences seemed minimal but purhaps they are major or I have missed some thing. The different parts for the injector pumps are as follows.

Now there are a couple of washer and gaskets that I did not list, but these are the only other differences I could find. This was from a genuine Isuzu parts book for a 4BD1(B) from engine number 940179, 1988 on
the book's part number is 5-8871-0226-0. One thing that I was confused was that the rear cover of the governor was the same part number for both N/A and T motors. I thought the T motors had the compensators fitted to them and as such would have had a different part the fitt it too. Clarification on this bit would be great if anyone knows. Of cause if I have stuffed up with those part number please let me know so I can rectify.

I don't know about the part numbers, but the US 4BD1T pumps usually have an altitude compensator fitted to them but no boost compensator.
Where my JDM 4BD1T has a boost compensator, no altitude compensator, Bush65's AU 4BD1T I think has neither boost nor altitude compensators and the US 4BD2T's seem to have both boost and altitude compensators.

I have two turbo pumps here (found a freshly rebuilt spare for not much), both have 10mm pump elements, the spare doesn't have a boost compensator and the spare also has a bigger taper for the pulley mount than the one currently on my engine.

The compensator is solely a pollution control device, it reduces the maximum fuel stop to prevent smoke when no boost is present.
The have no effect on economy or efficiency, there is a lot of misinformation on them online.
