    Some LT85 questions

    Hi people

have some questions about the LT85 gearboxes (behind a 4BD1).
    1. What is the biggest failure in the LT85?
    2. R380 boxes have an external oil cooler because of the low oil volume and temp issues. Is this a problem for LT85?
    3. From (2.) above would 5th be more reliable if external cooling was fitted? Has anyone done this?
    4. Are all the gearbox ratios in LT85 the same?
    5. How many different LT230 transfer box ratios were fitted with the LT85? What about the 4BD1/LT85s?
    6. Who is the best place to overhaul an LT85?
    7. Are parts still available for the LT85?

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

    [QUOTE=Lotz-A-Landies;1301465]Hi people

have some questions about the LT85 gearboxes (behind a 4BD1). [LIST=1][*]What is the biggest failure in the LT85?

Mainshaft wear, and 5th gear. Also, in the Diesel versions, misalignment of the adapter made by LRA caused front bearing failures at very low km. My Uncles 1988 110 was a prime example as it had 3 failures over 400K, the first one just out of warranty. The misalignment issue was found after it failed again, and the bellhousing etc was redowelled AFAIK.

[*]R380 boxes have an external oil cooler because of the low oil volume and temp issues. Is this a problem for LT85?

Not as much, as they take a fair bit of oil and the ally case acts as a good heat exchanger.[*]

From (2.) above would 5th be more reliable if external cooling was fitted? Has anyone done this?

I don't believe so, as the issue with 5th seems to be the way it is designed, not a heat problem.
    [*]

Are all the gearbox ratios in LT85 the same?

As far as I know, yes, although there are 2 versions of the Santana, so not sure if they are different in the ratio department.[*]

How many different LT230 transfer box ratios were fitted with the LT85? What about the 4BD1/LT85s?

Most Diesels had the 1.003:1, but my uncles 1988 Isuzu 110 had a 1.222:1 case. I still have it here on the shelf.[*]

Who is the best place to overhaul an LT85? MR?[*]

Are parts still available for the LT85?

    Yes, but at a price[QUOTE]

Justin you mentioned misalignment - how was this identified? And was it a batch (wrong jig) thing or an intermittant problem with just a few vehicles?

My box has been re-built once in 300K. Am assuming the problem is in the gearbox bell-housing. Can I check just by measuring before install?
