    alternator kaput

Our 1982 stage 1 series 3 4bd! is now a two battery Car--One in the vehicle and one at home on the charger and they get swapped over every couple of days

See the alternator used to squeal, but if I turned of the headlights and turned them back on again the squeal would stop. Sometimes reving the engine or changing to high beam would stop that squeal, hence did not think it was a major problem.

But now the alternator has completely packed it in--hence the two batteries.

So what is my problem likely to be, and how much is it likely to cost?

The squeal is most likely a bearing - silenced by changing the load. Failure is most likely the brushes, but could be the regulator or the diode pack. Last time mine failed it was the brushes. Took it and the regulator to an auto electrician, cost about $100 to fix, fitting new bearings and brushes, and replacing a burnt out wire in the regulator.

I recently had mine rebuilt, with 12 months warranty it cost $330.00. They also checked vehicle over and found a couple of other minor details that need fixing. All part of the service ........

Check US Ebay - there was someone on there a few weeks ago with NOS 12v Isuzu 4BD1 alternators for well under US$200.
