So my 4bd1 overheating problem turned out to be the oem temp sender unit/ gauge. Last night I replaced the oem unit with a vdo. Engine runs nicely between ~78* and ~83* even with a/c on/ spotties etc.

    Thanks for the advice!!

Thought it was going to be the prob mine has good and bad days reads between 1/4 and just over 1/2 the gauge but i know its running at the right temp as the coolant level never changes and if it got to hot it would purge out the over flow on the exp tank and id smell the frog pee

Realize this is a bit of an older thread, but..... recently after a rebuild (new Isuzu Thermostat 82degree) and a bad sender I replaced with a new VDO sender/gauge. On the old sender/gauge (original) prior to rebuild temps looked to be closer to 84degrees (sometimes shooting them with infrared sensor) but with the new gauge the 4BD1T is showing consistently 90-95. I've been doing mostly hardpack and city driving for these first 500km since getting it back on the road. Also, FYI, flushed the radiator during the install. Should I be concerned? Is it possible that the engine was always running like this and the new sender/gauge are just now displaying it correctly? Other than testing the t-stat (already done) and pulling to more closely review the pump, are there any additional suggestions?

Have you verified the new gauge with an IR gun?

I had on the old one but come to think of it no, I haven't yet on the new. That should at least let me know if it's true.

Worth doing as it does not take much of a problem in the wiring for it to read wrong. Does it go straight to 90 or does it normally stay at 80 and only go high when worked hard?

After putting ~500kms on it ovee the past few days it hovers between 90 amd 95 now woth the new bits. Motor was recently rebuilt (less than 1000kms on it, still breaking in) so I'm trting to determine its 'new normal' and prevent any tragic outcomes. I'll be on my way home today and will IR it once there, keeping an eye on it the whole way, but thusfar it warms up to 90-95 and pretty much stays there.

Either the gauge is wrong or the thermostat is wrong. The thermostat sets the temperature. It should sit at the thermostat temperature unless you run it out of cooling capacity.

The thermostat doesn't set the temperature of the engine it simply opens up at a certain temperature.
Say you have fitted an 82C thermostat, It will open up at 82C to allow the coolant to circulate in the engine and do its job of removing the heat from the engine.
If the engine is working hard it can easily exceed 82C and just because the thermostat is set at 82C it doesn't equate to the engine never exceeding that temperature.

So I am hesding home today and across offroad, hardpack and bituminous across all speeds the new vdo is still reading between 90 and 95 consistently. New 82 degree thermostat was put in a few weeks ago. If it's consistent at 90-95, and the IR once I get home is consistent, is it fair to say there is no likely problem?
