I run my probe in the manifold but I've been planning for a while to weld a bung into the downpipe and run two probes, just for kicks. I've got a hand-held thermocouple reader with long enough leads to take it inside while I drive.

But that's just another item on the long and ever-growing list. My rangie hasn't even burnt a tank of diesel in the last year.:(

So your motor is a non turbo built with the alfin (steel insert) pistons? They'll definitely handle high temps for a short burst, just don't let your mates move house with it.

under normal conditions Ive seen 200 degrees difference (admitedly thats on a larger truck engine)

the harder the turbo is working the more temp drop you should see

I'm only running 30psi and 650max pre turbo at the moment

Funny thing is, on my rangie, I had the EGT post turbo, 500 max, anything over 500 if it was maintained would lift engine temp, I just don't think the cooling system was adequate

G'day Matt, So you reckon that there is about a 150 difference between pre and post. If that is correct mine are still in the allowable range.

Don't know, as I'm running a different engine, turbo etc, so not comparable

I was going to shove in my other EGT gauge for interest sake, but my old boy snaffled it and stuck it in his car:D

Next time I have one laying around, I'll weld in a bung and check

Don't shift it, just get another post turbo, then we'll get some true data. Nice couple of drinks, have to do it again soon, ha ha. Mind you, I was slightly dehydrated the next morning. Hope you had a trouble free trip back.....

I have a factory 4BD1/T workshop manual for motors up to '87, in the specs section the EGT max is 750deg. Although there is nothing to say where the temp is measured! So if EGT is taken from the same spot 500deg is ok for extended use,

Yea Ta Dave, that'll be pre turbo

Well aware of the temps, going to up the fuel further once I sort the boost control out better

Today towing back from Melb Vern's LSE it hits 630 pre turbo with roughly 2.5-3ton

Dunno what EGT mine runs at or how much boost. Dont have guages for either yet. My motor is a late '92 truck spec fitted with a Garret t3, no waste gate. When towing a 60 series cruiser on the BIG tandem (it has about 2' of trailer deck empty with the cruiser on it) I can still pull 110kmh comfortably, LT95, and the turbo scream is almost deafening. Your ears ring for about 30 mins after shutting motor down!
