Can't say 've ever seen brown smoke from an engine, maybe drive it in a different light of day![]()
I took the landy for a strap today after completing the T25/28 turbo fitment and noticed a fair bit of brown smoke from the exhaust during acceleration. I note that this is the first time I've run the engine properly i.e at speed since fitting the turbo and the trip was less than 5km. I also note that i didn't even take it the engine to about 3000rpm.
During idle there is no smoke as per normal. Super brief puff of white smoke on start up.
I note that prior to fitting the turbo, the exhaust smoke was black while under load. I am running exactly the same supply air set up to the turbo i.e. snorkel, with the exception of inverted air cleaner element.
On this basis, I consider this to be related to excess fuel/ lack of air, with the brown smoke (relative to black smoke) being attributed to an increased oxygen content in the 'mix' due to the turbo.
I would like to know if others have encountered a similar problem and how they rectified it.
- Does a injector pump with turbo boost compensator need to be fitted to the engine now?
- Does the fueling (i.e. fuel screw) need to be reduced? **I haven't altered this from N/A factory settings.**
- Does the timing need to be altered?
- Does the turbo need to provide more boost? **I've temporarily shut off the wastegate**
I will also mentioned that earlier in the fitment I had oil leaking from the turbine and compressor wheels on account of restrictive turbo oil return line. Could the brown smoke be due to the burn off of residual oil within the turbo housing?
Perhaps I need to take it for a long run.
The engine doesn't use oil between services.

No i haven't fitted boost or egt gauge yet. Will probably pick them up tomorrow. But yeah it probably just requires a decent run.

dodgey fuel, probably a bio blend.. Fozzy does this when cold and IF I've made a bad batch.
Cold starting will be entertaining while you've got the fuel that burns "brown" on start up if your glow plugs fail.

Took the beast for a decent strap yesterday over some familiar territory.
I can happily report that there is no more 'brown' smoke, I suspect it was due to stagnate fuel after sitting around for ages. There was only a puff of black smoke immediately after dumping it. Cruising temperature (water) were at least 5 degrees below N/a setup. Under load (i.e. climbing for 20mins) temps are up to 10 degrees lower
To my surprise I even managed to over take another vehicle (which I might add was a defender) on a jump-up while in 5th gear!!!In the past I'd have to drop back to 3rd in order to maintain ~75-80 km/h in 100k zone!!
What I will say is that I'm dissatisfied with the lack of the iconic turbo whine. No whine at all!!I was looking forward to hearing that lovely sound through the drive side snorkel.
Is the turbo whine dependent on boost or moreover tuning??? I'm not running a egt at this stage so I'm reluctant to tweak the fueling too much. Also, I'll mention that it sounded excellent before I plumbed the 3in dump pipe into the existing exhaust system (through a 2.5in transition zone). I do intend on running a 2.5in system eventually.

You should run the same size for the whole lenght and use mandrill bends. I have no muffler on mine at all. The turbo noise will depend on how much boost your making
