It's time to replace my air filter.
From the parts list thread:
Main Element: Donaldson P90-0433 Main Element
Safety Element: Donaldson P90-0434
I understand what the main element is, but what is the safety element?
Do I need to replace it as well? I only noticed one filter when I had everything apart recently.
No Rick, the safety element is there (mainly) to prevent the engine being "dusted" if the main filter gets a pinhole or tear.
EDIT:
An added benefit though is that it can stop/limit dust ingress during filter changes - however this is not possible with an ISUZU landie, as the whole filter housing needs to come out to change filters IME.
The safety element will increase overall filtration efficiency during normal operation (i.e. even though it is less efficient it will still capture some of the particles getting through the main filter). It is also good at trapping any particles (esp large ones) which have been able to pass (e.g bounce) through a new main filter.
Make sure you fit the safety element - the safety element saved my engine when Landrover specialist's mechanic managed to to trap a small stick between the seal on the main element and the filter housing.
On another note I spoke to Donaldson about the restriction, if any, caused by the safety element. They said that there is a very small increase in intake restriction but that it is for all intents and purposes undetectable.
They also recomended changing the safety element every time the main filter is changed, which is what I do on my 4BD1T defender
