    G'day, welcome to the forum.

If you're thinking about using the mechanicals from the 109 in the County, then the cost should be minimal as the only modification you'll have to do is replace the V8 engine mounts with new one's to suit the Isuzu.
This thread will give you a basic idea what's involved >> County V8 to 4BD1turbo conversion <<

If you're keeping the 109 as is and planning on buying all the parts required to convert the County, then it will most likely be a costly job.

    Cheers, Murray

    v8 conversions to 4bd1t

Hi guys, Im a newbie at all this landy conversion detail .i have a landy v8 defender 1989 ,coil sprung etc ,from the specs i understand it to have a lt85 box,how strong is this box for a 4bd1t, I read sumwhere about upgrading bearings?how different is this gearbox to the lt95 ,have also read about the conversion being done by grubb with the isuzu box ,sounds very strong .we here in south africa dont have the isuzu rover belhousings, how common are they over there?i would really appreciate the correct info before i embark on this project ,regards Chris

    1. LT85 can be used with the Isuzu, but is liable to problems unless some care is used in driving. LT95 much better.

    2. LT85 is a completely different box with a separate transfer case and an extra gear - the LT95 has an integrated transfer case.

    3. Isuzu box is certainly the pick as far as strength goes, but a lot bigger job.

    4. The Rover/Isuzu special bell housing and flywheel housing are slightly more common than hen's teeth, but not much. May become more available as the army replaces its Landrovers with MB over the next few years and both vehicles and spares are sold off.

    Hope this helps.

The LT85 is sorta alright with the 4BD1 with the 4BD1T you'll probably need to get something stronger.

As I have posted before, my LT85 lasted ~240k km behind a 4BD1. It was then fully rebuilt. I believe the problem was stripping the mainshaft splines rather than agearbox failure. A new mainshaft was fitted as part of the rebuild.

It is now at ~420 000 km, half of that as a 4BD1T, and ~10 000 km of that towing a 5 m boat. Including plenty of 4x4ing.

It is still going strong (touch wood). Some of that may be due to running Syntrans.

You may want to retract that John... (though I do try and drive sympathetically most of the time, however the gearbox got a hiding that weekend)

    isuzu conversion

Hi chris, I adapted an LT95 to an 4bd1t using the isuzu bellhousing mated to a cut down LT95 bellhousing. There are evidently 2 truck bellhousings with different size input bearings. You need the larger 1. Any reliable engineer can cut the lt95 bellhousing and weld a plate onto it. The plate needs to be machined to suit the back of the Isuzu bellhousing. You need an Isuzu clutch plate with the lt95 spline in the centre. The rest of the clutch etc is Isuzu, you also need a 5/8" clutch slave cyl. My conversion works well and it was alot cheaper than buying the land rover parts to do the conversion. Good luck with the conversion.
