Turbos that work on a 4BD1.

Since there are a regular stream of "would this turbo fit...", would it be a good idea to compile a list of turbos people are running which have been known to work well???

    e.g.

MAKE : MODEL : TURBINE A/R : ORIGINAL FITMENT : AULRO Members using : Comments
Garrett : T2560/GT2560R : 0.64 : Nissan SR20DET / Silvia S14 : Isuzurover , RAR_110(?) : ~20 psi boost with wastegate permanently closed. Very good for highway/touring. Does not spool as earliy as a smaller turbo would offroad though.

Hopefully people can add to this and we can make it a sticky? Adding a (separate) list of turbos people have tried that are too small/large would also help.

garrett:gt2052s :A/R 0.50 : landrover td5 : c.h.i.e.f,Dranged : minimum boost i could achieve was 13psi slowly increased until wastegate permanently shut reached 26psi then after fuel pump mod it was going past 30psi only lasted 2weeks then snapped the shaft (was obviously going to happen with such a small turbo) performance was impressive down low but very quickly choked once revs got higher.tb28 is almost on.

Watercooled Garrett T3.Can't remember the turbine and compressor A/R's and it's too hard to read as it's on the drivers side above the oil filters and under the inlet manifold. 20psi boost with wastegate disabled. Excellent for highway use and pulling heavy loads.

Garret : GT2256V : ? : Mercedes Sprinter Van 2.7L (I think) : Inside : 17PSI Boost. VNT operated through Dawes valve. Very responsive turbo throughout rev range. Good for sand, towing and off road.

T3 is a family of turbo's Brian. I'm afraid we will need more info. However it sounds like we will have to wait until you are doing maintenance?

    Here are mine.

    Garrett T2/T25 hybrid.
    Exhaust A/R 0.49, 47mm turbine wheel.
Too small, good low rpm boost but over 3,000rpm was delivering drive pressures of 4x boost pressure.

Garrett T25 from Nissan bluebird with the CA18DET engine.
    Exhaust A/R 0.49, 51.3mm (officially 52mm) compressor wheel, 53mm turbine.
Great low rpm turbo, boosts early and quickly and will cover the engines rpm range at 15psi boost with no intercooler. Raising the boost or intercooling reaches the flow limits at lower rpm which results in shortening of the power band.
Can deliver more boost than drive pressure.
    Was delivering 17psi at 1400rpm and 20psi by 1800rpm.

The current GT2052 turbos are similar size (flow wise) to this T25.

    Garrett T2560.
This is A T28 with 60mm, 60 trim compressor fitted to a T25 turbine wheel and turbine housing.
With 0.64 A/R housing it would deliver 16psi by 2000rpm and 21psi maximum with wastegate blocked. This is a great turbo for passing on the open road, but is lacking low rpm punch offroad.
With 0.49 A/R turbine housing it delivers 19psi by 2000rpm and 23psi maximum with wastegate blocked. My favourite turbo so far.
All the above figures with no intercooling.

Closest production turbo is the GT2560R with a 0.64 A/R turbine housing.

    IHI RHB6
Factory fitted turbo from 1986 to 1988.
60mm turbine and compressor wheels. Exhaust A/R 11cm (0.42 inches)
Similar spoolup to the T25 from the CA18DET and cuts high rpm performance in exactly the same way.
An inefficient turbine design means drive pressures never get near or below boost. This limits performance even though the compressor is capable of high boost.
Fine if you've got one, but don't bother swapping to one.

Ben, I did write the A/R's down on paper some months ago when I did a gearbox change but alas it seems to have been mislaid. It will turn up one day.
