    Clutch Question

    Gday,

Please excuse me if this is a silly question.

The clutch in my county is knackered. I am running an lt95 behind a 4be1 (not the 4bd1) and I was wondering what kinda of clutch is required.

I want to know if the standard lt95 4 speed clutch kit will fit or will I require a custom clutch because of the isuzu.

    Cheers,

    Scott

Unfortunately, there is no way of knowing without pulling it apart and looking, as it is a non-standard installation. It is likely that it is a Landrover clutch, but there is no guarantee at all!

In my humbel opinion, if you do a non standard modification to any vehicle, especially where parts can't be seen, you should document what is done, and keep a copy with the vehicle, passing it on when sold. But even if you are the one who did it, will you remember what you did in ten years?

Well you could have a look at what bell housing is there. If it is the one for the gear box it will be most likely a land rover clutch, which type will only be knowen when you separate the gearbox from the motor. It should also have a adapter ring to mate the land rover bell housing to the motor. Had a similar set up on my land rover. It had a series clutch, a long extension tube to get the thrust bearing set right. Was not a good set up. Spun the spline out of the clutch plate. Series clutch was to light and small for the torque of the motor. Did work for awhile, but packed it in eventually. In my case a fair way from home. You may be ok if you have a adapter bell housing and a Isuzu clutch.

    Hi Scott,

I have a 4BD1 truck motor, which has a different flywheel to the one used by Land Rover. There is a good chance you will have the same problems I did. Basically I used an Isuzu truck pressure plate matched to a modified Toyota clutch plate. I had the centre of the clutch plate replaced with one to match the input shaft - the inner and outer diameter of the friction material matched the flywheel out of the box. One thing to watch is the height of the spiggot bush housing. If you don't allow for this the clutch plate won't be able to touch the flywheel. You also need to ensure that the release bearing has the right diameter and face profile.

The third firm that did mine was great, although the first two that had a go were a waste of time. If you like I'll dig up the details of the guys I can recommend. It's not cheap though

Gday Dave! Thanks for the reply. Hope everything is good and that you are making progress on your car.

I don't like the last sentence of your reply at all I am planning a Cape trip in sep and the clutch definitely needs replacing so hopefully it is the standard lt95. When I drop the gearbox out, maybe this weekend. I will find out what clutch it is and if it isn't the lt95 one I give you a holla to find out more details.
