How much whine is too much is subjective but to give you an idea, I struggle to hear the Isuzu when it's sitting on anything lower than 2000 rpm (minimum) :p It has been getting worse overtime but its gradual and ive learnt to live with it...to a certain extent. After all the vehicle is 25 yo!!!

Nevertheless, I will explore each avenue and hopefully get to the bottom of it once and for all.

Whining is noise due to lack of conjugate action between mating gears - in other words profile accuracy with new gears or wear of bearings and teeth profile causes many minute speed changes as the teeth move in and out of mesh.

Running with worn bearings is bad for the tooth profile. Gear teeth do not generally wear evenly over their profile even when bearings are good.

Also some are noisier than others. I use to have a quiet one, then replaced it with one that was loud. Rebuild it, didnt make a difference. (this is the point where I really hope people don't tell me the rebuild should have fixed it!!).

Also re the play in the drive train - I found that most of the play in mine was the input gear on the transfer.

Took the landy for a Sunday drive. Approx 250 km. Just after leaving my place noticed squeaky metallic sound whilst driving: thought it might be suspension or spring related or even gravel in one of the rotors (or like the sound you get when a steel front guard etc moves about its fixings)

The thing is, the sound went away when I had the clutch in i.e. free rolling.

Clutch out and under light/ medium load and the squeaky sound comes back.

Most noticeable at speeds less than about 60 km/hr (maybe due to increased road sound/ engine sound).

I'm loosely thinking prop shaft uni joints need a good grease up? Any thoughts on this?
