    Isuzu engine -> Series 1

    Hey all,
I have a series 1 48 at home, not sure it 80" or 88" atm.
I plan on getting it running and registered, at the moment it has the original 1.6l petrol engine which shouldn't be in too bad of a condition but I'm just curious as to whether i could drop a diesel, preferably isuzu engine into it?

    Cheers,

    Goots

If it has a 1.6ltr it will be 80".

You could possibly drop anything you like into it although if it is indeed a 48 it would be a little sacrilegious. Secondly the drive train might not stand up to much more torque going through it.

Keep the 1.6 and smell the roses.

    put the isuzu in it,
start it up and ten minutes later watch the engine fall on the ground.

    no,
the vehicle isn't built to have a truck engine bolted into it,
let alone the cost of replacing everything in the drive train to cope with the torque increase .

it is a classic car in land rover terms,
if you need to put a diesel in it, so be it,
    it's your car,
but try to put in something sympathetic to the age of the car.

How do you know its a 48. Let us know the chassis number on the Left hand chassis engine mount. If its a genuine 48 it would be a shame to molest it if a lot of the original bits are still there.
If you must put in a diesel use the 200tdi without the turbo as in my thread

If you must fit a diesel to an 80", then may I respectfully suggest that it would be more appropriate to fit an engine the same as the aftermarket diesels that were offered at the time for fitment to the Land Rover? The two main types offered were Perkins P6 or more commonly the Turner 2-stroke. Where you would find a Turner, I don't know, but you might find a Perkins, and by stretching the idea a bit a more modern Perkins might be appropriate.

If it is really an early Series 1 with original engine and reasonably restorable, you might be able to either sell it for enough to buy a replacement vehicle more suitable for a transplant (a Series II/IIA/III would be a way better starting point) or alternatively swap it for a vehicle that better suits your needs.

Very early Landies are worth preserving, especially as the later vehicles make more sense for engine and other mechanical conversions.

    What Dave said...

However: A 4BD1 would be too large for a S1 engine bay. A C240 (2.4L), 4JA1 (2.5L) or 4JB1(T) would be an easier fit. Adaptor plates are available ex-UK.

If your vehicle is a 1948 80" (86 prefix 6 digits) PLEASE PLEASE DON'T CONVERT IT FROM THE ORIGINAL, there are too few existant already.

We will find you another 80" 86" 88" of your choice to modify.

    Diana

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
