A spud bag (or radiator shroud) over the grille stops the fan de-coring the the rad.
A viscous fan clutch would prevent the problem too.
Hi Guys,
I'm thinking of moving my radiator back a bit to make room for an intercooler.. probably about 60mm.
How close can I put it to the engine fan?
I have heard stories of fans bending forward and digging holes in radiators during river crossings.. would this happen on the 4BD1?
Thanks

I removed the fan and replaced with a large thermo fan that I grafted into the fan shroud this was not to gain room though I am running a 3" thick intercooler...I have found the thermo very good and if water appears its as simple as flicking a switch ..
Thanks. Is it thermostat controlled or just on / off via the switch?Originally Posted by c.h.i.e.f

Like most things ATM that also is under re-designing as I only had it hooked upto a toggle but no matter how much I tell myself to remember to turn it on I always forget but only time the motor will get hot is after extended periods at idle...I rarely have it on whilst driving as it is not needed unless i am giving it a boot full and then my concern is egts anywaysand in winter I do not use it so that motor heats up as quickly as possible...
I looked at the generic thermo stats that get mounted in the radiator hose but thought I would aim at getting one that will fit in the thermostat housing as I no longer have heater hoses...
My mounting of the intercooler is not as pretty as some but that's partialy to do with it being the same size as the distance between the guardsso I had some chopping to do!!
This is from awhile ago which I have now tidied it up a tad
Note: once headlight surrounds are put back on the holes are covered from view...
Wow thats massive. I think im going to W2A which will make it easier. The heat exchanger is 550x350x50 so much easier to handle.

Plazmaman, the "800HP" unit.
They are expensive, but:
They do a lot of R&D, not just send other peoples work to China to have copied.
They have fantastic customer support, and a well respected quality product that is made in Australia.
I was going to tig up one myself but when I spoke to these guys I changed my mind.

Sounds like they would be good gear...I will probably consider one in the near future as the one I am running is a cheapie and probably is not the best for efficiency..
