    4BD1 engine rattle

Hi guys while driving hope the engine in my county started to have a pronounced rattle at the time this happened i was sitting on 90 kph so i droped down to 60kph and drove the 3 klms to my house.
The engine still runs smotthly but there is a deffenite tap tap tap sound at idle but goes faster as the revs go up, and when i do the old long scew-driver to ear on to engine trick the tapping noise is coming from No 1 cylinder.

My question is what to do next? remove the injectors, rocker cover then head? or maybe is it a small end bearing i dont know. The engine has 340000 klms non turbo and gets regular oil changes with good quality oil.

if it does it while not driving drop the fan belt and recheck.

check the valve adjustment and the valve springs.

if all thats normal while its running crack open #1 injector union.

Is the 4BD1 IDI? 'Cos that sounds like a loose precomp chamber

I found it was a loose alternator pivot bolt.

Well tryed the above and the only differance was a miss while the No 1 injecter was cracked open a touch, took the roccker cover off and nothing broken valve springs all intact there is a little play in the valve adjustment but nothing extreme?????????

My worst case suspicion is maybe a gugen pin thats moving about or broken piston rings? I guess its time to remove the head!

    Lost Landy

Set the valve clearances before going any fyurther - especially as you say the clearances are "a little loose". I have had cases where there were bad rattles and knocks that completely disappeared when the clearances were re-set.

A while go I had problems along the same lines as you are having. Was a three part problem. All had similar symptoms, a tap or rattle from under the bonnet. One was a uni joint gone, second was a dud head gasket and the third was a shot ejector. Might be a good idea if your motor has not had them done for some time to have the ejectors looked at. Only cost me $400 for mine to be reco`d Certainly caused my motor to rattle and then when the one sus ejector finally gave up it missed fired.
    Cheers Hall
