Brian, you are correct, it is a clutch assembly. Part number is 8944756860 presuming you still have the Mitsubishi military type starter. Sounds like it needs replacing:(

Clutch is $220 from auto elecreician. Will bite the bullet and buy a whole new thing:(. I have to say the 110 has been the most reliable, easy to maintain, inexpensive and rewarding vehicle I have ever had. I should spend a bit of money on it.:D

The best way (also most expensive) to fix your starter problems. Buy a new one:( I got the new one tonight and it will be fitted very soon:D.
Cheers to all who followed and helped. Much appreciated.
Brian.
This is the one:D
So, how'd you go with this, is it a magical thing again, or are there still issues?, mine is doing a similar thing, only when it feels so inclined; I'm only asking because I'm not convinced the starter motor is the only culprit.
Hi Gerry,
It was magical when the new starter came to life. As far as the old one is concerned, it died because the starter relay stayed on and destroyed everything. I would remove the solenoid and relay and clean up the contacts so they don't get sticky and cause the same thing to happen to yours. The clutch is the expensive bit that will cause you to have to buy yourself a whole new starter as the clutch gets hot and bothered when it stays on untill you can get the positive terminal off. $220 ish :(
Cheers,
Brian.
brain do you mind letting us know where u purchased your new starter from? price?
