Word of praise for the guys at Jack Macnamara.
Dropped off the centre diff in bits to J Macs at lunchtime yesterday
It needed some building up , machining in bits and putting back together
Geoff put the single piece shaft in and the stronger washers
He had it ready for lunchtime pick up today
    Cost was $ 500

    Just goes to show:

a big Turbo Diesel, a diff lock, some articulation and just about nothing will stop a Land Rover!

    too small, and too noisy.

A decent 4BD1 with the right manifolding and turbo will be far more useful. Will see far more km between rebuilds, and is a far simpler and repairable engine IMO.

Can you get them easily over there?

    No, that's the problem. Unobtainium...

I can get the 4HG1T for $8000 though..........

more than the value of my 110 CSW.

It would be cheaper to get a Toymota 14BT or Nissan FD46T ............

The 4J engines (B1 and G2 Turbo versions) are cheap here as Jap/Far East imports @ just around $2,500 for a bench-tested version, all mechanical IP.

I can get a 4M40 <spit> or a Nissan TD27T or the Mazda/Ford WL25 but these either have issues (Mitsu 4m40 heads) or else are a little light in the jocks to pull 2.5 ton.

I sort of have a rule of thumb of around 46kW / metric ton empty weight. The 4M40 can make the horses, but not the mileage.

The 4JB1 or 4JG2 can do the mileage, but in standard tune struggle to push the ponies.

The adapter kits for the 4J are available from M&D in the UK @ around $600-odd

4JB1 or 4JH1 are far better. Direct injection with a strong head.
