exactly! try finding another 25 year old motor in any vehicle with 500k+ km that runs with the reliability of our beloved 4BD1's.

Generic 25 year old car problems are there, but stuff all of them are related to the motor. Worn wires, earth straps, motor mounts, bearings, hoses, drive shafts, electrical gremlins etc... all normal for a car of this age and should be treated as such with good preventative maintenance.

    Show stopper at the moment.
Starter relay burnt on and fried the starter clutch (and everything else in the starter motor). I'm still waiting for $400 to land in my lap for that one. I've had various starting problems with filters blocked but you can thank service stations for that. I've had the snorkel hose come loose and wear a hole in the top of the oil filter out in the middle of nowere. I've had a grass root?!?!?! get stuck in the pickup from the tank and stop fuel flow hense stopping a lot. That one took a while to figure out. I've had RYCO fuel filters come apart at the rim which is aparrently a 'common fault with that number filter' says super crap . I too have had both front half shafts break off at the centre and appear to have had been fatiguing for a long time.
And wheel bearing failure at 100kph, power steering box blow out the end seal (messy one) front uni joints turn into dust twice. Whilst full of marine grease?

    I still love the thing.

    Cheers,
    Brian

Only thing I have ever experienced that went near stopping it was a clogged sock filter on the pickup inside the tank. Even then it wouldn't give up and would run up to about 1800rpm, go above that and it would splutter and starve. Almost sucked the fuel lines flat trying to feed itself

I agree that most issues will arise from poor maintenance or plain old wear and tear. My first Isuzu County was bought cheap because the motor was shot. The previous owner hadn't notice a coolant hose let go on the freeway and cooked it.

It was fully rebuilt by a recommended specialist using all genuine parts. Unfortunately the "specialist" was mainly skilled in relieving suckers like me from their money. The motor lasted less than 25,000 kms before the non-genuine head gasket blew. We replaced a number of other non-genuine parts to get it to run right.

Isuzus are incredibly reliable, but like anything you need to service them regularly, check all the wearing bits and use the best (usually genuine) parts.

On the subject of hoses, I recently noticed by chance that the long, slim metal oil line that supplies the fuel pump had almost rubbed through where a rubber hose was resting against it. That could have been ugly

I've only had the same issues as most such as :

*Starter cct wiring catching fire as most county's have terrible wiring
*alternator oil feed line with tiny split causing a big mess on councils footpaths across nsw
*turbo letting go which was entirely my fault and could have easily been removed and driven home
*oil pressure switch sticking which was fixed by removing indication globe and replacing switch with a gauge

    400k on the clock
So all problems have never stopped it completely but more so put a slight dampened on proceedings
