    Opinion on

I've been looking around on the interwebs for a replacement engine for the Defender, and I saw this on gumtree (think it's the one mentioned in the "Isuzu Landies in various marketplaces" thread).

Range Rover turbo diesel | Cars, Vans & Utes | Gumtree Australia Baw Baw Area - Drouin

I gave a call to the seller, and he says that it's a turbo, had a full rebuild about 7 years ago, hasn't got much use since. The engine and gearbox were pulled from a 110 defender originally (didn't know that the engine AND gearbox were cross compatible between rangies and defenders).

Now I have zero experience with the Isuzu engine, other than looking under the bonnets of those who own them, so I need the kelp of those of you with a lot more knowledge on them than myself. First, is it a viable option for dropping into the Defender? Are the gearboxes really compatible? I would have thought not, but..... I don't know the right questions to ask, regarding said engine, TBH, so any help would be appreciated.

bargain, (asides from fabbing engine mounts) yes that will bolt in all in one go,
at the worst you might need to muck about with gear levers but if I was in your position I'd do what I could to get them to hold it.

My Nephew is a Rangie / Landy freak who lives in Drouin if you want I'll get him to go check it out if hes not away for work.

PM me with details if your interested and I'll get him to go sus it out

if its good you get a one way ticket to Melbourne and drive the rangie back to Alice.

I would be contacting him first to find out what 5 speed is behind it. It could be some bodgy conversion. None of the 5 speeds are long lasting behind a turbo 4BD1 but some are a bit better than others. That should bring some comments from the forum Ideally you should be looking for a LT95 4 speed preferably with a TRB (tapered roller bearing intermediate shaft assembly) in 0.996:1 transfer ratio or go the Grubbs way with the Isuzu box but either way you go you are going to need some time for the conversion. Neither is an overnight job. I have done several conversion over the years PM me anytime if you need assistance (over the phone of course), possibly could even have some of the bits you may need for the conversion. Pity your dilemma didn't happen near me you could have parked up in the back of my place until it's sorted. Good luck Mike.

If I'm not mistaken, it's an LT85 Santana gearbox....
[edit]Guy was driving while I called him and didn't have much time to talk, but he did say that the gearbox was manufactured in Spain - only LR gearbox I know of made in Spain is the LT85, but I could be mistaken....[/edit]

If it is at least it will standard bolt up and no modifications done. It should be a 1 piece alum gearbox casing and not the 2 piece steel one which is weaker. If it's come from a 110 fair chance it will be the 1 piece LT85. Both are called LT85 boxes. You need to get someone to suss it out and look for the usual LT85 problems like mainshaft wear, endfloat and 5th gear.My opinion is that you need a standard setup without modifications so you can obtain parts and part numbers anywhere if something goes wrong, can make a big difference if you are out in wupwup land.
