    4BD1T Engine problems,help needed!

Hi, I think my engine is a bit ill but need a bit of help from the experts to pin the faults down!
When I got the Land Rover with the engine in it had done 180000 miles but had been stood for 5 years.
After restoring the 110 and getting it on the road the engine is giving me a few worries.
When first struck up in the morning it puts out a quite a bit of white smoke and runs a bit lumpy, give it a few revs for a minute and it clears and runs fine with no smoke.
When the engine is hot you can smell burning/hot oil which is coming from the breather I think, and after a run up the road there is little spots of oil on the back of the vehicle, not sure if this is from the exhaust or blowing back from the breather pipe!

Where do I start? Thought it would be ok with 180000 on it but it has had quite a hard life ( know the previous owners)

    Regards

Advancing the timing will help the white smoke. That mileage (if genuine) is not normally a cause for concern.

The oil splatter could be from anywhere. Rear main crank seals leaks are common. If the engine has oil on the outside, then yes it will smell bad when hot. Clean it down and then start leak hunting.

Could be a stuck/gummy ring if it has stood for that time which would explain oil spots out the breather. Also could be a crook injector giving white smoke. A compression test should indicate the above.

The engine is clean on the outside, when I had it out doing the vehicle restoration I steam cleaned and painted it, there is a little weep from the rocker cover gasket but there seems to be some oil around the bottom of the breather pipe, I've removed the air/oil separator to have a look inside but it was relatively clean!
I was thinking the smoke on start up was maybe oil getting in the cylinders or possibly oil from the turbo, is either of these things possible? Maybe valve stem seals leaking, maybe it's just worn out and piston/rings/liners worn?

Hi yes possible ring trouble, had a telephone around yesterday but no one seems to have clue or have parts for these engines in the uk.
Does anybody have a contact in the uk for parts or is it a case of shipping from abroad?

How much boost is it running ? sounds like blow by and yes if its sat for a long time I would say maby 1 or 2 of the pistons have sticky rings .

Prob best to contact an isuzu place over there in the UK they should be able to get the parts you need tho i would say get a new head gasket remove head and sump in situ then take out the pistons and using a ring spreader remove the rings from each piston and give them a good clean and refit and make sure all rings have good free movement then re assemble best done with 3 sets of hands .
We (mike ie,cheif and myself) put mikes back together in a beach car park after he had pulled it down due to it spitting oil out the dipstick and running that rough it wanted to near tear out of its mounts and it was found to be a stuck ring on number 2 and i think it was caused by crapy fuel and a dodgy injector dribbling

Identify the problem before shopping for parts.

Well I was thinking I need a rocker cover gasket anyway so why not buy a full gasket set so if I need to take the head off I would have the gaskets.
Can you reuse the head bolts?

Not sure what boost, it has the garrett turbo on it with no wastegate.
I have tweaked the fuel screw slightly as it seemed a bit dead.

Some white smoke at start-up is not a concern if it clears once the engine starts to warm. If it is excessive, then it could be one of the faults others have suggested - see first pic below taken from a 4BD1T manual.

It is simply due to the cold components around the combustion chamber absorbing heat from the air that the piston has compressed in order to get it hot enough to initiate combustion.

If your compression is down on one or more cylinders, due possibly to stuck rings, then the issue is worsened.

As bearman said, get the compression tested before you do anything else. See 2nd and 3rd pics below, again taken from a 4BD1T manual.

Sorry can't help with where you can get Isuzu parts in the UK.

I don't recall reading in any of my manuals for the Isuzu 4BD1T, and I did check one before posting here, that any of them say that head bolts can't be re-used.

Some here will know better than I, but I would suggest 1 re-use should be OK. If you did re-use, then ensure the each bolt goes back in the same hole that it was removed from, this is easy enough to do.

It should go without saying that the order for removal and replacement and the tightening method should follow the directions in the manual.

It sounds like you have the stock free-float turbo. The boost pressure and rate of boost rise won't be particularly high with that turbo, mostly due to the large turbine housing. Maybe around 10 or 12 psi, but will depend upon fuelling.
