Got back into the county... The (county) seats were better and it had more leg room than the cruiserHowever after 3 days driving the cruiser the isuzu felt like a slug and the clutch was shockingly stiff in comparison...
I must admit... fitting the 4.5 to the landie did cross my mind

It is a good engine provided you don't have injector / starter motor / alternator failures (all documented as being common).
Was the Cruiser a 200 Series twin turbo or a single Turbo 76/79 Series? I haven't driven a 200, only 76 and 79. Lots of grunt, but I have no idea why they are saddled with such short gearing.

I have got a 2009 76 wagon for work and a 110 wagon as private vehicle
I find the cruiser fuel consumption to be about 15 - 20L per 100Km depending on how you drive it.....
The defer ride is much better and I much prefer the driving position and seats of the defer.
That 4.5L is a nice motor!!! I have clocked just over 160km/h in one
The cruiser has just clocked 100K Km and has never has an issue.
The defender has done 75K and has has a number warranty jobs, hub seal, gearbox oil leaks, 2 X egr valves (one just outside of warranty, ouch), AC system crapted itself.
Still rather have the defender

That'll put you in roughly the same neighbourhood as the twin turbo 4.5 in the 200. Forget the little single turbo in the 79.
Your gearbag will hate you for it and you'll need an aircleaner so big it'll go where the front passenger seat was.
If you really want a toyota diesel, the only one to have is the 24 valve 4.2L six. These were mechancially controlled in the late 80 series and EFI in the 100 series.
Here is what they can do without internal mods:

Just had a 2YO base model Prado (3L ? d4d TD). The prado used 13.2 L/100 on a similar trip.
The cruiser felt like it needed a 6th gear (which the prado had).

looks like a modded FT or FTE plot...those Gturbos are a fantastic upgrade
