Smile Roof top tents on perentie soft tops

I am new to this forum and am hoping to get some advice on the Australian Army land-rovers. I have been to the two Adelaide auctions looking to buy a perentie soft top with the view to building in to a cheap camper. They have a solid roll frame with a mesh roof rack bolted to it. Is it possible to mount a roof top tent to it? Would it be safe and legal?
The FFR land Rovers have 4 batteries and I assume that they are 24 volt? Is this a liability or can it be wired to run an 12 volt Engel fridge and other accessories. These FFR's seem to have better canopies presumably because radios cannot cope with getting wet.
We would like to take the Land Rover up north to the Cape. Can snorkels be fitted or are there other water proofing measures for them. I am aware that the vehicles will be slow and dusty but that doesn't bother me as long as they are reliable.
Some of the soft tops have pulled out of the groves above the windscreen. Are these ones to avoid or is it a simple fix?
    Thanks for any help
    Paul

yes you get 100 AH of 24v (4 batteries in series parallel)
the 24v alternator can run a variety of amperages if you know how and shunted right you can weld with it.

there should be a small frame up on the top of the canopy, I wouldnt reccomend putting a roof top tent up there it just wont fit its just about big enough for a single swag however.

they can be snorkled but the reality is mostly you wont need to, there are "facotry fit" snorkles that are ADF stock.

the soft top coming out of the windshield means either the leading channel rope has distorted, torn away from the canvas or the clamps have lost pressure or been damaged.

if they've lost pressure they can be fixed if they're damaged they are replacable.

    Welcome to the forum

The rack is not really big enough and shaped with a slight ridge along the centre - it could be replaced with something useable for a roof tent, the frame would be strong enough

The FFR land Rovers have 4 batteries and I assume that they are 24 volt? Is this a liability or can it be wired to run an 12 volt Engel fridge and other accessories.

The batteries are all standard 12v, but the 4 in the body are series wired in 2 sets to provide 24v.

Engels and LED camping lights will run well on 24v - but there are a few other options/issues to consider

Standard or home made snorkels will fit fine

sail track, canopy probably worn or possibly not installed correctly

Thanks for the info. We have bid in the last two Adelaide Auctions and are gaining knowledge at the inspections so hopefully we may soon be successful. I see the Army Land Rovers as a bit of cheap fun but may also consider a new defender. The Frontline Machinery auctions seem to be about 3 months a part.
I currently have a 2010 Triton which had a new engine fitted under warranty at 48,000km due to a manufacturing fault in the engine block that caused exhaust gas to escape into the cooling system that in turn forced the coolant out of the overflow. I have since done another 10,000 km trouble free and am just starting to get a little bit of confidence back in it. It seems that a lot of modern cars have problems, maybe Defenders do as well but I have always had a soft spot for them. I will keep reading the forum and update my progress as it happens.
    Thanks

    Hi Paul,

I am just around the corner from you, at Balhannah. If you want to come around and take a look at my 110 FFR you are most welcome.

I have taken off the roof grille, and I'd say it would be pretty easy to fit up a bracket for a roof top tent. We have a ShippShape RTT and with a couple of brackets it would fit OK on the roll cage and the rear hoop. I've also removed all the 24v stuff (batteries & the generator).

We went away this weekend in it (down to Goolwa) and took it for a run on the beach. It went very nicely, sitting on 90Km/h mostly, but up to 100 occasionally. They have really sweet cruising engines. Not much acceleration but once up to speed they go very nicely. It was very happy on the sand too.

If you make me a reasonable offer I might even be tempted to sell it to you! Unfortunately, Mrs Spud is not very enamored with it. Apparently it is too drafty and it doesn't have a radio. And she doesn't like the colour scheme.

Anyway - if you want to come and drive one, or just to have a chat about it, give us a hoy. 8398 0324.

    Cheers
    David

Oh, as a by the by.

I am interested in sourcing one of those alternators, IF you're keen to retro fit the 24v system to 12v (which isnt all that hard)

I'm keen on helping out to do the conversion for you in exchange for the alternator and some of the harnessing.
