Happy new year all!
Been a long time reader, though haven't posted much - thanks for everyones knowledge! Massive help. Ill try add something when I feel I can add to the conversation!
The title of the post says it all - how much would you pay for a fully rebuilt Isuzu 4JB1T? (I'm looking at one, not selling)
And what's the usual cost of rebuilding one of these?
Many thanks in advance!
Hi airman,
Thanks for the reply!
I'm asking as there is one available for close to 4k. Supply and demand i guess, thought it was a good deal and its there... although you seem to think its a normal price?
I'm looking for a diesel transplant for my S2A SWB and 'thought' it may be a good choice - but you think not? Is there a better bang for my buck?
Ignore the above. The 4JX1 is an unreliable POS (do a google search!) and the 4JJ1 is commonrail - so not a good prospect for a series unless you are very good at wiring.
The 4JB1 is a good prospect for a series, however make sure it is a domestic one with timing gears, not an import with a belt.
As for whatit is worth - depends how thoroughly it has been rebuilt.
A company I used to work for had a japanese import van with the timing belt 4JB1T. It's a long time ago now, but I'm sure the timing belt only drove the injection pump.
I think the 4JX1 is one of those misunderstood engines which with the right care and attention can be a real rip-snorter (about 120kw stock). But was a bit ahead of it's time (16 valve, unit injectors like the TD5) and apparently quite sensitive to oil viscosity: http://specs.amayama.com/specs-isuzu...ebruary/13508/
Not the engine for a series though.
Thanks isuzurover,
Your opinion is similar to what I've read before - and thanks for the domestic/import tip, muchly appreciated.
They said it's been totally rebuilt - but i guess without receipts (they might have them, haven't asked yet) from who it was done by, its hard to tell if it was done well...
As for candidates for a series diesel transplant, would you fit a 4JB1T, or something else? (if you were looking for a durable/reliable diesel for a swb?)
The 4JB1T is a good option, and I came close to fitting one myself.
I have instead decided to keep a modified 2.25D for the time being, to stay closer to original.
Any conversion I do (down the track) would replace the box and t-case too. If I do one it will probably be to fit a 4BD1T, but it is a VERY tight squeeze if you want to keep the rad panel in the same spot.
Looks like you are wrong.

So they really did use pushrods and a timing belt on the same engine.
