Thats a nasty quote. I just fitted a new turner head to my 300 130. I sourced the head and bits from Turner (about $1400) and then paid someone here to fit it up with radiator work- all up about $3500.
Now it does go better but I'd still prefer a 4bd1T. I'm hunting for the bits and when all gathered up, will organise conversion using an LT95.
If you are going down the path of an Isuzu in your defender, I'd suggest you get all the parts before approaching some workshop- unless you have deep pockets!

Been there, done that. I had a 300tdi Defender wagon that I wanted an Isuzu in, so I bought a Perentie wreck (chassis, 4BD1, LT95, axles, wheels, suspension, brush bar and even a bulkhead) for $3500. I ended up selling the Defender chassis and 300tdi (which I replaced with the Perentie bits) for $1000, the wheels for $120 each and the LT95 for $1200; so I got a 4BD1 and gal chassis for ~$800. I also have the bulkhead which if I ever get around to galvanising and replacing the one I have with it I'll sell the old one and recoup more of that money.

Using the Perentie chassis avoided hassles as it only required engineering for a seating capacity change (Perenties are only complied as 2 seaters) rather than an engine swap, where you have to start worrying about emissions etc. I guess if you have a 2 door you won't even need a seating capacity change.

Pulling your pride and joy to bits and putting it back together isn't for everyone - and it isn't easy - but there's some food for thought anyway.
