    Late model Isuzu/Defender combination

Just wondering if anybody has fitted a later model Isuzu engine + cogbox to a later model Defender?
I have a 2011 130 dual cab (2.4 Puma) and yes its a smooth, quiet achiever - but I can't help but think what if? Like the Tdi guys wanting 4BD1s I suppose.

I have a Stage 1 with a 4BD1 in it which is a long term project (chassis up rebuild) but to have a "modern day" version just sounds so appealing.

So yeah - has it been done? Or looked into? Is it even doable (without selling a kidney and remortgaging the house)?

Not quite answering any of your questions but a Cummins ISF 3.8 litre could be another option. Its a current engine model.
Probably harder to get hold of than an Isuzu though.

    Dervish's 110 now has a 4BD1 - turbo, I think. I saw it at KLR Automotive.

KLR have done a number of conversions but it's not cheap but I think Dervish did a lot of the work himself.

    Beery,

The cummins 5L T.D V8 for nissans US market "pick ups" is a current model cummins engine option too... which i imagine is also expensive and hard to source.
Without looking any further into it, its appealing as its a heavy duty V8 diesel that isnt a duramax/chev. Dont know about its physical size/weight.

    Ron,

I'm not sure i can legally 4BD1T the 2011 - emissions laws and all that....

All you need to keep in mind is any conversion (donor) must be EU4 compliant...

    Tombie,

I know!! Which makes everything more expensive and more complex, and probably limits choice a bit too.

Speaking of Isuzu, does anyone rate the Isuzu 3 litre 4JJ1 diesel - out of a DMAX? Or any current Isuzu truck engine? Or is nostalgia for the reliability of the Isuzu 4BD1T simply non-transferable?

I swapped chassis from an incomplete Perentie, so while my vehicle was a Defender, it is now in the eyes of the law a Perentie. You could do the same, although it might raise some eyebrows seeing a "1989 vehicle" with fancy Puma features. Mine was a 300tdi with 450,000 km on it, so not really in the same league as pulling out a relatively new Puma engine.

It's a bit ridiculous that you can not be allowed to do something to your vehicle, but if you swap the chassis to an identical but older one you can. That's the system we have though.

I can sort of see the attraction in a newer diesel than the 4BD1T, but with ECUs come headaches and expense. The Isuzu needs fuel and about three wires.

I did something similar to Dervish, using late county and 300tdi components. I can see the attraction to a perentie chassis stretched to 130 with a puma interior. However you are left with a mish mash which makes buying parts tricky to some extent. And it's a big job. It depends whether you want to drive it or work on it.

The 4jj1tcx is a fantastic crd engine. A 2012 on dmax engine and autobox would be a great transplant imo. My work ute gets amazing economy and the auto has lock up on 2nd 3rd 4th and 5th gears. Flash tuneable to a reliable 490nm also.

The Isuzu 110. Solid and as dependable as a rock, coming soon with auto box😊
The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈
