I know LT95s are the stronger box but I seem to read a lot on here about stuffed LT95s. There also doesn't appear to be a great supply of people who can fix them. Mine has been out twice since buying the perentie and now is leaking into the bell housing again so will have to come out again .Quote:

nothing magic about them as a box its just a stockish syncro'd 4 speed with a reverse and intergral 2 ratio transfer case with a center diff and lock.Quote:

A H55F cruiser gearbox seems to bolt up to the Isuzu with a downey belhousing. Picture is at this link - Downey bell housing question | IH8MUD Forum
I'm not sure what other parts are required ? Or even if a downey belhousing is easily sourced? The downside is the H55F only seems to have only been available with a part time transfer case. First is deep, but fifth only 0.845.

The 440F seems to have pretty good ratios - 1st 2.95:1, 2nd 1.53:1, 3rd 1:1, 4th .717:1, reverse 2.678:1
Were the 4BD1T Isuzu trucks available with an automatic in Aus?
The 440F was apparently in 3F 80 Series cruisers up to 92 so should be available with their permanent 4WD transfer case. Also Wholesale Automatics do a heavy duty valve body Wholesale Automatic Transmissions
I haven't seen anyone mention using cruiser gearbox/transfer cases with the 4BD1(T) before? Will they fit? Any thoughts?

You will probably find that most people here are not enamoured with the notion of part time four wheel drive when full time 4WD is standard on most L/R after Series production ended in the early 1980's.Quote:

The inlaws have an NA cruiser Ute, and have had 80/100 series previously and they all bad gearbox problems. 5th and reverse usually.

I dont want to hijack a thread, but I am almost the same question so here seemed as good a place as any to ask.. I am on the look out for a 6x6 Perentie, I know they are 4 speed, but which gearbox and transfer do they have and are they considered fragile?

Chris the 6x6 runs exactly the same box as the 4x4 (LT95) with a 3rd drive output for the rear axle where the normal PTO would bolt on. They are plenty strong enough with normal driving. Definitely not considered fragile - they are probably the strongest manual box LR have built.Quote:

i have looked at gearbox swaps from every angle and then some.
LT95, rebuild kit about a grand, the same as for a LT85 LT 77 or an r380.
so any argument about cost or being expensive is just rubbish.
transfer case, well no argument there ether, they are basickly the same. well actually they are the same apart from a spline or two. at least with the LT95 your not wearing out the mating faces. but as i said no argument because what ever gearbox you do use your going to bout an LT230 behind it anyway
the MSA box has crap ratios. even if you pick up a box cheep by the time you do adaptor plate drive clutch, get the LT230 to bolt on your out big money
R380. by the time you buy all the bits, once again your out big money.
LT85, nothing wrong with them, they hang in there ok, they wear out faster than an LT 95 and if you a mad nutter yes you can brake them. but that will be on you not the box, same rules apply correct oil and maintenance. there are some upgrade bit you can get for them and different suffixes.
NB there are more LT85 isuzus than LT95 isuzus out there, thus there are more turbo LT85s tha LT95s out there.
LT95, the only problem with this box it the gap between 3rd and 4th, usually over come by 31" tyres and a turbo. but more normal peaple drive accordingly for a 30 year old vehicle
Allison AT545 family, will fit easy, parts almost off the shelf, have to sort out fitting LT230 = not hard. no parking pall. no lock up, so that stuff your cruse.
Allison MT family, has lock up but WAY to big, needs room for the lock up clutch.
Allison 1000 2000 2400. brilliant, will bolt up have to sort out LT230 fitting. needs an after market computer to run it. that's 1600 usd alone. try and fined a box in Australia??
TH 350, 400 700, just lunch in 20 min
