4BD1 strip for reco - odd white stuff on pistons

    G'day,

Anyone seen this in an engine before? I picked it up from the auctions Monday and started stripping last night, once the head came off found all this white gunk on the piston crowns.

The rest of the engine has good condition bits or what appears to be parts added for the sale. The head bolts and head gasket appeared to have been used and were solid mated prior to removal.

There was some rust in the intake...I was thinking it might be a gutfull of saltwater left to corrode with the the alloy? No rust on the bores.

Definitely looks like its had something corrosive in it.
I'm sure someone else will confirm, but I've a feeling the bores are hard chromed so may be why there's no corrosion on them?
Even if it all cleans up OK you'd be wanting to have a close inspection of the conrods and pistons in case it was running when the stuff got in there....

Make sure you blank up the connections on the injection pump too.

I initially thought it was some kind of foam for fire fighting but it has a gritty feel to it. I'll suit up with some appropriate PPE and treat it as harmful anyway.

I'll be stripping this unit back individual components for rebuild...though it would be nice not to find bent rods.

Definitely looks like it has had a gutfull of water, and probably salty water by the white stuff deposited in the cylinders. Check the rods for length and bends - most likely why it was changed out.

If the engine still rotates nicely and you can clean up a small area on the top of each piston a quick check of the block surface to piston dimension for each piston at TDC should give you a feel for bent rods.

It's in a 'no spin' state....everything is getting fully stripped regardless, even if it looked mint.

I did what you suggested with the Td5 that is being relieved of duties...you could see it by eye. Still it drove at least 1000km with one rod 1.5mm shorter than the rest and the piston cocked ever so slightly rearward.

It will be interesting to see what the bottom end of this motor is like, The top end looks like it has been drowned in salt water and Not flushed out afterwards then left for some time giving the salt time to do its thing to the alloy.
