New Isuzu 110 Owner in US

Greetings from Georgia in the US! I’m the proud new owner of a 1985 110 County with an Isuzu 4BD1. I’ve named her Ophelia, and she’s got the LT95 4-speed gearbox with a Fairey overdrive. I’ve looked through a lot of the forum here, and it’s been a great help. My 110 has a couple of unique features with the diamond plate windshield visor, homemade roof rack, custom winch bumper, and diamond plate side steps. Anyone seen this truck before?

On to a quick question regarding service: I know the subject of what fluid to use in an LT95 has been beaten to death around here, but I can’t purchase the same oils here that you have available. The mechanic at the shop that sold me the truck recommended Liqui Moly 10w40 semi-synthetic diesel oil in the engine and LT95 / T-case / Fairey. He recommended Liqui Moly 85w90 high pressure gear oil in the diffs. All sound good? Liqui Moly is a German product, and their info on the 10w40 is here:
    MoS2 Leichtlauf 10W-40

Any info is greatly appreciated! Looking forward to a long life out of this truck.

The diff recommendation is fine. The eng & transmission spec not so fine. Try to find a high grade 15/40 mineral oil for the trans. Synthetic for the engine is ok probably. Some additives however can interact harmfully with the non ferous and bronze alloys in the transmission. Rule is to keep it simple. I'm finding penrite 15/60 to be fine in my lt95a and 4bd1t. Not sure if that product is available stateside but similar product will be. Perhaps google penrite spec and go ahead and match similar product available near you.
Btw you have a lovely looking 110 wagon.

When I put Penrite 20/60 in my LT95 in a RRC I couldn't change gear once the transmission became hot. 20/50 or 15/50 would be the max I would put in. remember the LT95 has an oil pump which doesn't like thick oil.

If the OP is in cold country maybe a 10/40 would be appropriate. Do not put EP 80/90 in an LT95 transfer case as it will chew out the brass thrust washers and the swarf will block the oil gallery which then screws the bearings and becomes very expensive.

Be VERY careful with the Fairey overdrive as they do not like too much torque and frankly I doubt it will last very long with the torque of an Isuzu. Only use in top gear and gently on flat ground .

How do I know ? I have been there done that with a RRC with a 3.5V8 which does not have the torque of an Isuzu.

    Regards Philip A

I used 10w40 semi synthetic in my stage 1 V8. It didn't like it. The engine was very tappety and the gearbox crunched every time I changed gear.
I now use Penrite 20w60 mineral. It is recommended to use wherever SAE30 is specified.
The army specifies SAE30 for these engines and gearboxes.

Oh, if you live in a cooler climate (like up near the great lakes), use a thinner oil (but mineral). My Landrovers get used in temperatures from about 15-45 degrees C ambient. If I was to use them in the alpine areas, I'd be running a lower grade of oil for winter.

Thanks for the advice! I’ve been trying to be pretty gentle with the Fairey. I experimented with splitting 3rd and 4th gear, but I’ve primarily used it in top gear, and I always double clutch and raise my engine speed when I downshift the overdrive back to 4th gear.

I’ve also been looking at Shell Rotella T4 15w40 mineral oil as an option for oil in both the engine and LT95. It has high zinc content, 1200 ppm. The Penrite 20w60 is 1600 ppm.

Heres a data sheet on it:

    Thoughts?

    Howdy KC

I'm up here in Iowa with a recently delivered Perentie. I've run the various Rotella weights in the Rover V8s for years and been satisfied. Just changed the oil in the Isuzu a couple of weeks ago and used the 15-40. If you want to make up that bit of missing zinc, there are off the shelf additives that will do it, just don't go overboard.

My '08 VW Gti likes the LiquiMoly stuff...don't think I can choke down the price for it two gallons at a time though

    Enjoy!

Thanks Keith! Are you running Rotella T4 15w40 in your LT95 too?

Its got something slippery in it

I haven't changed it as it looks clean...it's getting cool enough that it doesn't really like the 1-2 shift until its warmed up.

    I may drain and re-fill with 10-30 for the winter...likely with cheap (maybe O'Reilly's) GL4 compatible / 10-30

I'd like to be brave enough to try some RedLine MTL in an appropriate weight...haven't talked to anyone local using it though.

I’ve read about 20 different threads on LT95 oil, and finding a conclusive answer is tough.

Im looking at using Redline MT-90 75w-90 Manual transmission oil in the transmission, transfer case and Fairey overdrive. It appears to be the right viscosity range (same as 10w40 and 15w40), it’s GL-4, and it specifically says it’s safe for brass synchros.

Red Line Synthetic Oil. MT-90 75W90 GL-4 Gear Oil

I was first going to use Liqui Moly 10w40, but the semi-synthetic and anti friction additives have me worried. Then I was going to use Shell Rotella T4 15w40 diesel oil, but I read the diesel detergents are bad for the LT95. If I don’t use the redline, I’ll try to find some basic 20w50 mineral oil, but the redline sounds good on paper.

    Thanks for any help.

    I'd try MT90.
The viscosity is spot on, it's equivalent to a 10W-40 engine oil.
    You could also use MT85.
Amsoil in an equivalent viscosity would be a good choice too.

Synchro performance should be really good, and it won't shear like engine oil does in gearbox use.
