    repowering a RRC, thinking about a 4JB1..

    Hi All,

i know very little about isuzu diesels, and to be honest the engine naming schemes do my head in, but here is what i'm thinking about doing...

I've just picked up a 1988 RRC, the plan when i first bought it was to put my maxi-drive front and rear diffs into it and a set of 255/85/16 BFG KM2's... After a few phone calls, it seems simply fitting the tyres is going to involve an engineer, so i thought if i need an engineer, i'd better think about what i want to do long term with the classic..

It is a dual fuel 3.5, with an LT77 and has a set of LRA flares. I bought it because my D2a simply isn't doing it for me, there are too many computers and it simply doesn't feel like a Classic. I do love the running costs, but hate the computers controlling the engine, gearbox and body. So i have decided to sell it and turn the classic into a vehicle i can feel confident about taking anywhere, so to that end i've been scouring websites trying to gather information.

I want to fit a diesel, so my initial thoughts were for a TDi 200 or 300, but then i saw people talking about the Isuzu 4JB1-T and to be honest it sounds like a great alternative, i've found the guy in the UK selling conversion kits, so it seems to be a great option.

Has anyone done this conversion here? I'm tossing up about what gearbox would be best, i have the LT77 and an R380 here, but i've also become quite fond of the auto in my Disco, but i don't know if there is a suitable non electronic auto available, this got me to wonder if the drive line from a Rodeo would work, i see they have autos, but i have no idea about the specs and reliability of their auto's and transfer cases, and if the transfer case would work in regards to prop shaft to the front diff. Can anyone shed some light on these g/box and t/cases?? and give their recommendations on what would be a good LR option.

I'd appreciate anyones input on the options i have keep it all LR or go Isuzu....
    Cheers

    Steve

Plenty running bigger than that tyre size without engineering, ran 32" tyres for years without any dramas.

OK, not a RRC, but D1s aren't much different:

My reasoning for the 4JB1 was the size and weight of the engine, i don't want to do a body lift, and i believe a body lift is required for the 4db1 to sit under the RRC bonnet. I do like the idea of a bigger capacity engine, but i don't know if i could get the rangie to ride like i want with all that weight up front, the 4db1 is double the weight of the 3.5 V8...

Do you know of any conversions into RRC's that owners are happy with? I would want A/C and all the creature comforts, and i have always thought of the 4db1 to be more of a defender/county engine...

I want to consider all options, as to what would suit the classic best.
    Cheers

I did look at all the cheap territory diesels... some bargains to be had, but the computers in the D2a are enough to turn me off a modern engine

I haven't experienced anything that would make you say the extra weight is bad. on road or off road. Offroad they're a lot more useable in my opinion.
yeah i know of one or two haha.

this is my old mans classic, with A/C and all..

and this is my disco which I've just gotten to a drivable point

WOW, they are both stunning looking...

can you tell me more about the conversions, what gearboxes would you recommend, what do you think is the best combination of engine/gbox/transfer? My maxi diffs have 4:11's and i'll be running 255/85/16's. With all that torque, i would need something with a tall overdrive for the highway i'd assume..

They both look to have body lifts, will the engine fit without a body lift??
    Cheers
