Turbo choice

If i was getting a turbo now, i'd want a VNT, its worth the trouble to get one set up. No single turbo will be able to operate across as wide a range as a VNT can do. My 2256 VNT Garret is set to 1.5 bar max boost, though I don't go there often, 15 psi is fine for 95 % of the time. It's so versatile, and always seems to have boost. the Isuzu is a bigger engine, but the 2256 has been used in more powerful engines, up to 185 hp. ( i'd be happy with that :) ) Mine uses a mechanical diaphragm to change the nozzles. , After some progressive increases to the fueling settings, the VNT transformed the standard 300 tdi, which I thought was gutless, and hard to drive, there's more power and torques across the whole rev range, and driving the car is much more relaxed, I think I probably do 30-40% less gear changes that I used to, even though I have since fitted a disco -2 transfer case to make use of the extra torque. Picture attached, the kit was from Madman in South Africa.

Its hard to get consistent figures, so i appreciate any corrections ;

a 3.9 liter 4bd-1 is 83 hp @3200 rpm, ( 245 n/m), (21.3 hp/liter)

a 4BD1-T is 121 hp, @3000 rpm, (314 N/m), though some sources quote the 4BD1-T as high as 100 kw or 134 hp. (31- 34 hp/liter). it looks like a 2256 VNT would be a good match for a 4BD.

A standard 2.5 liter 300 Tdi is about 110 hp @ 4000 rpm (265 n-m), (44hp /liter.)

So on the surface a standard 300 Tdi is more powerful than an NA Isuzu by a fair margin, and almost as powerful as a 4BD1-T, but I can't say i ever went to 4000 rpm in my tdi to find all those horses.

I'm more interested in the usable power up to about 3600.

I'm a bit financially challenged to do a dyno run, but IMV my car, (VNT, APT intercooler & tweaked fuel pump) now is at least 10% more powerfull and more torque than standard, so I'm claiming about 125 hp, and 290 m/m, ( though I think is better than that). But its lot more "drivable", and close in power to a 3.9 liter Isuzu T.

Now I get why the transition from turbo Perentie to RRV 3.6 was so stark, 268hp @4000 rpm and 640nm @ 2000rpm.

I still like the Perentie.

Sometimes I think if my 300tdi ever wears out I might put a Isuzu in the 130 but then I think no I like a real Land Rover and also I probably I wouldn’t be able to **** that far

I have the td04-19t.
All up it was around $2000, that including a new 3" exhaust, new air filter housing, new manifold, 2nd hand truck sump and oil filter housing with Nugget adapter.
While i had the motor out I also insulated the firewall and put a new clutch in.
I am more than happy with it, even though I only run 12psi and 600deg. 1981 model motor so I dont want to push it to hard.

Lets me know if you want to get more out of it Alfred. Have the same turbo, i also ran it on a stage1 motor for a while, 30psi and 720egts. Sounds like you could go for a few more psi. 15-19 is nice.

Wow. I could smell mine cooking at about 600 degrees, post turbo.

I assume Vern’s is 720deg pre turbo?
