The smell was more like paint or surface oil burning off.

I did want pre-turbo EGT sensor but installer talked me out of it and said just add 150 degrees to post turbo reading.

    Wow 30 psi!!!
Thanks, but i will stay low for the moment with this old and abused motor
I was up to 15 psi and 700 deg when I first installed it. I'm now restricted by my 3" snorkel right now and undersized air filter (I think you have the same one?)
Still looking for a turbo motor or at least a newer one.

Hmmm i have a 3" snorkel, donaldson airfilter, still making 30psi and now lower egts dues to better intercooler, but a lot more fuelling.
If you are hitting 700° and 15psi, it sounds like too much fuel or not enough boost.
So how old and why so abused is the motor?

Why are people so precious about these motors!? Feed 'em full of boost, they love it!

And why does everyone want a turbo motor? There aren't many advantages and what advantages there are they won't benefit from, unless going for big power.

One thing I will say about KLR kit, i purchased one and after install it just didnt sound right, triple checked everything but it had a whir/whistle that just wasnt 100% correct to me. (I hear high tones such that my on base physical had them test my hearing multiple times and when I asked why was told if I heard any better they'd check ancestry for dog.....wife doesnt believe that story as afyer 27 years she is certain I can no longer hear) ..... anyway, the turbo gave out 5 months on and KLR stepped up and replaced it. Apparently Garrett had a bad run for a short time after honeywell toom them over according to local reps, b/c they took three phases of testing down to one for a time. Regardless, I wanted to affirm that KLR did more than I expected, replacing the unit.

You mean they did what they should have under warranty, or are consumer rights non existent in Australia?

I bought it installed already and was not the first civilian owner. To bring it into the states (where i now live) and through customs it requires the engine be of original type, so the turbo was deinstalled there prior to shipment, then reinstalled here after import. As a second owner and a second install, i dont belive they were under legal obligation.

Ah yup, **** that complicates it a bit! Good on KLR then. Every time I have spoken to them on the phone they have been great to deal with.

I've noticed a predilection for water/air inter-coolers with aftermarket 4BD1T installs....is this a function of the difficulty in fitting an air/air unit at the front or something else?
