Securing and installing an appropriately specified towbar could be problem No.1.
AFAIK the towing pintles and the mountings while probably more than adequate, are not rated.
If someone has more info I am happy to be corrected
Any thoughts about the towing ability of an army 6wd defender as a vehicle for towing a caravan weighing 1800kg long distances .

They towed the Haulmark PT2-2 2000kg trailer.
I think an 1800kg caravan should have no issues.
The thing I would recommend is to have a towbar fitted. There is a business in Melbourne that make and fit them.
Why I would recommend this is it would have a ball type connection on a tongue that is at a lower height than the pintle.
The pintle hooks are rated to 4.08T:
4.08T Light Towing Pintle - Dixon-Bate
Useless information without the tow vehicle rating to match, but the pintle hook itself is certainly adequate.
What about power for pulling up long hills. Is there enough?
How about gearbox strength under that sort of load ?
Do you think Id be doing a lot of changing down to third on hills or do you think it would pull most hills still in top gear ?
If you tweak the fuel pump you’ll be able to get up most in top I would think, but if you’re after a rocket ship, it may not be the vehicle for you.
Third gear will still be used at times when towing though.

Change the turbo, tweak it and the pump, that should provide the pulling power. But if it was me, i would be changing the diff ratios to 4.11 as well
In my 6x6, on some hills, I change down towing or not.
There is this one hill, tight hair pins, 14% grade, I was down to first. No load.
But, it got there. It always gets there.
