Adding this as it may be of use to someone...I contacted Berrima Diesel who directed me to MTQ. The chap at MTQ was all over the job and had a great phone manner. He made several suggestions on how I could go about minimising costs and freely gave advice on which pump would be best for me to send to him (I have a couple on the shelf). He gave an assurance they have a few 'gate checks' to ensure they are not wasting their time and costing you money when they rebuild these pumps.

I'll send a pump off shortly and up date my 4BD1T build thread when it gets back.

Does it need doing at all?
Out of the 8 or so 4bd1's i have played with over the years, i have never had an injector pump that has needed to be looked at other than tuning.

    What's the issue with yours?

I don't know if there is an issue or not, I have not seen the three pumps I have bought actually work on a running motor....... and I have no real expertise in this field. I understand the pumps are long lived and generally need little or nothing in way or maintenance.

This build I am undertaking is being done so with a view to deliver essentially a brand new truck that will last for years and be an example of long term reliability. We will be taking it to far flung places and I just don't want surprises along the way....getting the IP rebuilt or assessed is insurance against this. I do understand MTQ may have little to do and I will be out of pocket for shipping, the inspection and a bunch of new nitrile seals.

I can roll the dice on fitting the pump and cross my fingers it works and lasts, but I have a departure date looming and once I do this work I want to sit back and not touch it again for 500k. Just like the rest of the engine I want everything at 0 km's or damn near new from the outset. That ebay turbo I ordered is simple to check, tick off and put to work, the IP not so much.

The pumps I have seem pretty fresh and look like they could bolt up and be put to work...but so did the engine I got from the auctions. That engine was seized solid with a bent rod. In fact the rod was bent so bad I had to scrap the block and crank so I am a little leery of trusting anything I buy from the auctions.

With other vehicles in my 'fleet' I swap parts and do anything to keep them running until the parts fails. With this build a breakdown due to parts failure, that could have been prevented, will at best take the edge of a family trip or holiday, and at worst expose the family to the added risk of a remote recovery.

Also what was his advice on which pump to send out of curiosity?
He gave basic, but solid advice on sending the pump with the least amount of play in any of the shafts....just less work for them to do and far cheaper for me. He went as far as suggesting I send a couple of pumps and they can assess which requires the least amount of work to refresh. Should the pumps be identical they can 'scavenge' for parts, if needed, to save costs.

Ahh so the pumps came from the auctions in an unknown state, and not off a running engine? Well i can see why you would want them looked at then.
I would get who ever is doing your pump to set it up for maximum fuelling, then you can detune it via the fuel screw.

All done...set up to flow for a turbo and the injectors got the turbo love as well. Whatever that was.

Anyway very happy with the service and staff at MTQ.....proof will be in the pudding though when I get too fire it up.
