Figured I may as well ask.

    Hey,

Whoever has been reading my post in the Defender section already knows I am after a reliable vehicle with performance.

I spoke to a company in Australia about the 3.9l Isuzu in the Perentie vehicles, and they told me the ISUZU 3.9L is more reliable, stronger, more torque than the TD5 Defender but the TD5 may be better 'on the highway'. They said the Isuzu outsrips the TD5 and even the 1HZ in the toyota that is known to go forever.

    Anyway long story short...

Since I am looking at a TD5 Defender (now a perentie)... besides the comfort levels (you can always buy seats, sound deadening etc if you need to), how does the ISUZU 3.9l compare to a TD5?

    Reliability/longevity wise?
    Power/performance wise?
    Economy wise?

On paper it seems the TD5 has much more power than an ISUZU and with a simple ECU remap it can be extremely good. Cruise at 120/130kmh without significant impact on the fuel economy. Without the remap, sitting over 110kmh will change the fuel consumption quite a bit.

So how would the Perentie/isuzu 3.9l compare in this regard? How much can it be improved? I assume the fact 3.9l is bigger than the TD5 it can produce 'more' power/torque thus improving efficiency etc but It may not work the same with diesels as it does petrols.

With a tuned turbo you will have little issue sustaining those speeds in a 3.9L Isuzu, still have decent mileage per unit and reliability with ease of maintenance when needed, imho. I suggest, if you get one, you may find you focus more on the fun crawling at 5km/h instead of blowing by those opportunities at 120.

The 4x4 Perentie has the n/a 4BD1. This is low on both power and torque compared to the TD5, but both can be increased by fitting a turbo.

The 4BD1 is probably more durable than the TD5 (mine has done 630,000km with no internal work, just crankshaft seals and sump gasket, plus work on starter and alternator, and replace an O-ring on the filter feed pipe). The 4BD1 is more robust than the TD5 in the sense that it stands abuse better - overheating for example will not be a serious problem with the 4BD1, but will be very expensive with the TD5 (probably new head).

As against this, the 4BD1 is much more tractor-like - literally rivet popping vibration at idle, although smooth enough at cruise speeds. And the combination of low speed torque and only four cylinders will find any shortcomings in the gearbox or other drive train parts due to the torque impulses.

Umm, a perentie needs a lot done to it to get it at the same confort levels as a TD5...

    - hardtop conversion
    - only 2 doors
    - add power steering
    - add turbo
    - clutch upgrade to handle the turbo
    - small fuel capacity, I sure if there are any off the shelf aux tanks
    - disc brake upgrade
    - sound proofing

There is the odd one pop up for sale with 21 centenary add on.....but they will probably cost more than a TD5

I nearly went down this route for my overland rig but settled on a low k TD5

Then there's the towing capacity. In reality, the Perentie is stronger but owing to the placarding, it has a much lower tow capacity than a Defender.

I do keep the personal stuff to myself, but if he doesn't like getting 'bugged' rather than being dumb about it, don't read the thread? Guy inserts himself into a conversation and then doesn't like it. Seriously.
