    Pre-filter fuel?

Looking at an integrated pre-filter diesel water separator for my 4BD1T.

Research indicates a 30-150 micron pre-filter will be thego....the Ryco equivalent for the standard filter (Z169A) filters between 5 or 10 microns and I can't find anything conclusive on whether it's 5 or 10.

I take it the 4BD1 is 'happy' (ie without damage) to handle detritus down to 5 or 10 microns and it's the later model common rails etc that need sub 10 micron filtering....preferably 2-5 microns.

I don't want to add unnecessary restrictions to the fuelsystem with redundant filtering...at a minimum I'll add a water separator.

So do I leave the factory filter to handle everythingor chuck a 30 to 150 micron pre-filter in.

What is working right now for Isuzu owners?

    Many thanks,

    Jason

I have a 169a at the tank and the standard one at the engine. Shortly after installing it my fuel pump died! Coincidence, i don't know, but have read that the pump doesn't like it to be too restrictive.

Good to know, I'm leaning heavily on trying one of the 150 micron Stanadyne units first up.

The Lucas water separator does a great job at picking up sludge and sand size particles. I did replace that with a Racor filter separator for a bit, but got blocked with all stuff the Lucas would have picked up. So went back to the Lucas.

I also tried Ryco spin in filter/separator before the lift pump which was ok. I might fit the Racor there one day as great at picking up water.

Ultimately went simple and put a petrol inline filter in before the lift pump. Cheap and easy.

I you have that much crap in your tank you should take it off and thoroughly clean it out. Same time have a good think about where you have been buying your fuel. That is the wrong place for a Racor filter/separator. Should be fitted between the Lucas sedimenter and the injection pump somewhere.
Racor is the standard of the industry that all others aspire to be. Almost universal fit in marine installations.

    Gday Brian

I agree. Replacing separator with filter separator didn’t work so refitted the Lucas separator. The Lucas is also a good primary screen whic can be serviced in the field.

I will eventually put the Racor spin on filter/separator in the engine bay mounted to radiator support like you did, before the lift pump. The Racor separator was more effective at pulling water from fuel.

This blockage happened back in 2012 on a Simpson trip. The army 110 tank was new from 2006 but as I found out on that trip fairly cactus with internal rust, cracks and holes, which showed up after a few corrugations. After the trip I pulled it out welded up cracks/holes and sealed it with Redkote. All good ever since. I also didn’t realise the filter was 2 instead of 10 micron.
