    Removed my injectors... surprise!

I've always had some white smoke that didn't seem right, particularly noticeable at idle, even after warmed up. I've always put up with it as some days it's barely noticeable - probably the same, just my perception changing I imagine. Anyway, finally going to get my injectors checked.

Removed my injectors today... 2 of them were like the first photo and 2 like the second photo.

What do you think, maybe they weren't sealing, so tried something different?

I'm thinking they would be a different depths in the cylinder too. Could that even be the cause of some pesky white smoke?

Awesome. Not sure if it's the cause of your white smoke (wouldn't really think so) but definitely not ideal.
It's possible that the seal fell off the injector when being installed and turned upside down in the bore.
I had one that kept sliding off so I stuck it on the injector with a smear of grease.

Update is I had the injectors checked at a local diesel specialist and he told me the crack pressures and spray patterns were both fine. Caveat is he ultrasonic cleaned them before testing.

Hopefully I'll get them installed this weekend and see if the copper washers around the right way makes any difference to the white smoke. One guys I spoke to while trying to find somewhere that would check them for me suggested I check the valve tappets. I'm sure I did that once, but that's a good idea. I picked up new injector seals from the isuzu dealer, so I'll see how I go with them reinstalled, and then check the tappets.

FYI cost me $118 to get 4 injectors cleaned and checked.

Just wonder how often the injectors should be checked. My Isuzu is ticking along nicely but at around 400km and not knowing if they have ever been done I wonder if now's the time ?

I would save your money. In a previous vehicle I did 750K with a 4BD1 turbo. 3 times I pulled the injectors and had them checked - all 3 times I was told they were operating fine. The secret is to keep your fuel clean and add a fuel additive/injector cleaner whenever you fill up. If it is running good and not blowing any excessive smoke or low on power don't touch it.

Thanks Brian, that's comforting to know. Its hard to tell if its down on power but to be fair to the old Isuzu its pulls pretty well for a normally aspirate '80's diesel. Certainly runs well enough for me.

    Cheers,

    Mark

You will feel it if they are playing up Mark. Rough running and even feeling like a miss at times.

Comforting to know. I have been wondering whether I ought to get mine checked again. Last time they were fine and I was told I'd wasted my money. That was 500,000km ago.

That's awesome, mine ticks along like a Swiss watch. I do love how people talk about service intervals of 500,000km with the Isuzu, very reassuring.
